Woke up with a sore foot on Sunday morning. It felt as if I had bruised it, but I hadn't knocked it or anything.
Got a bit worse during the day, so I took some painkillers and didn't give it much more thought.
3 am this morning I was awoken by excruciating pain in my big toe. Never experienced anything like it!!

Got an emengency appt at doc at 9am.

GOUT......... aaaaaaaagggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh.

Jab in the a$$ plus some other meds. Not so sore now.

I really feel for you, I have had it twice in 3 years and nothing matches up to the pain. Both times in the first joint of the big toe, last time was for 3 weeks and god knows how many Ibrufin I took but they work.
There is a drug you have to take every day which prevents any repeat symptoms called AXOMOLOPHIN or something like that. Gout is a form of Arthritis caused by a build up of Acid particles in the joint.

Gout tends to attack joints which have been damaged at some time, ever kicked a rock with that toe?
Prevention is almost always better than cure, and cheaper,so cut down on the red wine and coffee a bit and drink a lot more water.
That way you shouldn't have to fill yourself with pharma-toxins.

After 27 years in the military , 10 of them falling out of planes I don,t think I have got a joint I haven,t damaged at some time or other. (especially the Brain) Checked the diet , don,t drink red wine , on decaffe but guilty of not drinking enough water to flush the system through.

Ahhhh great.....just another old age malady i have to look forward too ! and i know i'll get it....i haven't missed many so far. Tennis elbow was the last one, and it's still here. Shingles before that. getting old is a hoot ain't it? If pain is your cup of tea you'll love old age. :ya2:

I've never had gout, but my wife has had it a couple of times.
My best riding buddy is in his mid Fifties and gets the gout quite often in his foot.
From my observations it's very painful stuff.
But I did have tennis elbow about 25 years ago when I was just a kid :y23:

I saw that on Wiki last night..... it is fairly close ............

Feeling fine now. Pain almost gone.

silli
wot he should put you on is a pain relief to get rid of the pain,
then Allopurinol as a preventative
you take this wee pill every day, it breaks up the acids in your blood and stops them gathering in your lower joints, ie your toe.
It really is an easy fix, no ned for the pain at all.

The actual treatment comprised a coctail jab in the a$$ with voltaren, and short term pain relief. Also a drug called Colchicine which is just as Devo mentioned. I must say I'm impressed, 'cos 30 hours later I am hardly aware that there was ever a problem.

Cheers. Silli.

That Voltarin is darn good stuff. The doc gave me a prescription for the creme, topically applied, when I broke my ankle. That stuff reduced the swelling and eliminated 2/3 of the pain right now. I was supposed to use it three times a day; but that rarely happened. I used it morning and night.
