Thank you! I am 50, started riding when I was 6, if ya count a Briggs n Stratton 5hp mini, Dad always had his Triumph, rode on that with him since 4-5, had a 74 Suzuki ts125 at 10, then a 1980 Cr 125 at 13, many different bikes till mid 35, but have been broke n raising family since so have not been riding much, just ol Big Red around in the woods. For the last 6 years I've carried my Dad's 73 t140 around with me, disassembled. I work in Automotive collision Repair/refinishing/Restoration, fulltime, and have restored full vehicles for others, I have some mechanical knowledge, but have never fully rebuilt an engine myself.
Alot of emotion tied to this bike for various reason, but the clock is a ticking, and I wanna ride in the spring, so this will be my first project for myself. The bike was in a flood, was seized when it was given to me, had been sitting for 5-6 years in Dad's basement when I was told I could have it. In the 70's, it went through various incarnations, my memory of it stock, red, with gold stripes, was after getting a whooping for tipping it over whilst Dad was in the house sleeping. At some point, I was told risers were added to the forks, black paint with air brushed naked woman on tank., Smaller, I think, rear wheel, says 5.00x 16, with swept back bars. I remember the woman and funky seat and bars. I have a very specific direction I want to go with this bike reflection of where I like to ride, and it's history, to me, personally, and pride in the Brand. I'm an Irishman now that just wants to ride his Bonnie. The direction I want to go is dual sport, some modern traction and suspension, short rear fender, black, small custom taillight, lil more travel in the rear with some modern shocks flat black smooth triumph seat, stock tank, painted Navy Blue metallic with me pearl white stock triumph stripe, gold stripe. Black cap. Black off motocross style bars, custom gauge and headlight, black, black controls, black forks with gators. Black rims, stainless spikes, 50/50 Metzler on/off road dot tire. Custom disc brake in back? Frame, semi gloss black, swingarm, same, as well as the tank I did awhile ago, tank needs redone, one of the kiddies dropped it when moving. Engine is at my buddies where we just got set up to start rebuilding. Had jug honed and new pistons, rings, gaskets, have been purchased. I have various questions and much to learn.
That's the whole story n I'm sticking to it.

:five: Welcome, from Northern California. Sounds like a real project, but, being a labor of love, also enjoyable.
Thank you, it is quite a project, for my first bike build. I am yearning to ride bad enough to finally get it going, the grandiose vision has been part of the problem, as I have kept telling myself when I get the finances to be able to do it....Ya! But now I just wanna ride so I'm focused on that and the long term build can be done bit by bit. This bike, which I uploaded a pic of as I received it 6 yea s ago, had already been quite customized years ago, still feel a little purist guilt, but really have what I feel is a cool and suitable for my riding vision of a classic engine and tank and the oif portion as stock, but modern triumph suspension etc...

i had my 72 T120 iin a flood some years ago. filled the motor up through the carburetors. i drained it out, kicked through a gallon of WD40, filled it with oil and warmed and drained it twice and ive been running it ever since. but i was rght on it within a day.

youll likely find a lot of rust in the gearbox but it can be fixed. your 1973 gearbox is possibly still the weak early one, prior to the CP1000 factory update. if it is, you will want to update the weak parts, else it will eventually break on you and possibly destroy the cases. when you get into the gearbox, start posting pictures and we can figure out whats going on.

Yes Sir, thank you, I believe it's a March if 73 bike, 724cc etc. I recently posted some pics in the restoration and rebuilding section of me in the bike when my Uncle first bought it,, #73t140, and what it looked like when I got it from my Dad, and after I painted tank.

is that a custom frame? i dont see any head steadies.

i dont know exactly when the y updated the gearbox, but what happens i s that the first gear layshaft locking dog shatters into four pieces under shock load and then jams the layshaft against the bottom of the gearbox. depending on how fast you are going it eith er just locks the box or cracks the cases open on the bottom. i did mine at a stop dropping the box into first to free the clutch, and just replaced the locking dog. since then i swapped in a complete 1971 transmission set that had had the upgrade.

dont need to change it unless youre going to ride the bike, but if you are it needs a look.

At one point in the 70's the bike was set up as a chopper, risers in forks, swept back bars, 3 tiered seat with high sissy bar, 16" rear Harley tire, wiring was routed through frame. The mods you are referring to probably occured then. The fact that it had already been so modified helps to alleviate any purist guilt. I want a desert sled/scrambler/enduro route.

It will be ridden, and ride often. I have kept the lower decent with sprayable white grease, but intend to crack lower anyway to inspect and clean and empty sludge
Thank you
