A new XC owner cut open his oil filter after the first service. He was concerned about the metal he found in it. Obviously, the filter did its job. Of course, this is normal for any new engine.

I'm not that brave. Lose sleep if I saw that. lol

I do stick a magnetic screwdriver in the old oil though.

It's almost impossible to "cut open" an oil filter without getting chips from the saw onto/into the filter media. Besides, this is a very elementary test. A much more thorough test would be an oil analysis. They run about $20. Less if you buy multiples. The results you get may only create more questions, but then you can visit: Search for answers...and piece of mind.
