Sarah,
Congratulations on getting your new Bonneville! IMHO there is no substitute for riding experience to become comfortable with your bike. My suggestion is to ride it to your nearest, large, vacant parking lot (church lots during the week are usually empty) and ride the bike around and around it clockwise and then counterclockwise until shifting, accelerating, braking and turning feel very comfortable. Then I would work on balance and slow handling (barely moving), especially tight "U" turns. Once you have mastered these, then add some speed, including hard acceleration.

My guess is that a couple of sessions is all that you need. And if you are really paranoid about dropping the bike add some engine guards so that when and if you do drop the bike, any repairs needed will be very minor (most drops occur when the bike is stopped or moving very slowly as gyroscopic forces keep you erect and balanced when moving).

My T100 is now 13 years old and hasn't ever been dropped.

ENJOY!!!
