Hi all
just a quick intro,
I passed my uk motorbike tests this aug (2022) , I am 62 and wish i had done it much younger, I started riding on my lexmoto michigan 125cc cruise (max cc allowed without test pass here in the uk), that was too slow so brought a yamaha yzf 125cc (one hell of a good bike), passed my text and brought a suzuki vstrom 650 2007 , great bike too , and a 250cc inazuma gw250 for a general runaround, the 1st two bikes were sold when i passed my test and now the last two are going as i am buying a stunning 2013 t100 bonneville that i collect next week,.
It s amazing that at the start of this year i had never ridden a motorbike and now i have been through so many, i am well and truly hooked although the weather here in the uk is crap this time of year
regards
gary

Hi Gary welcome to the two wheeled club, I live in Cornwall and we do have some great weather and normally a lot of rain which is now back with a vengeance.
Non bikers wont or don't understand the therapy a motorcycle gives you and the freedom .
I've been through a lot of Harleys Yamaha's and Hondas but now on my 4th triumph its definitely addictive , I started my triumph journey with an 865 Bonneville then a speed triple after that the new rocket 3 gt but found although an awesome bike with arm wrenching power it wasn't for me. but now I have a 2022 speed twin which I have just done a decat on its lovely light loud and very quick ! any advice i can help with be glad to this might help with aftermarket bits for a starting point Motorcycle Parts & Spares Online | TEC Bike Parts ride safe !

my issues is if i should go for a 2001 carb bonnie or a 2013 fuel injection there is about a grand in the price difference

Sure if I were going for a Bonneville now it would have to be the newer fuel injected 270 degree crank version .
the Bonneville I owned was a 2010 865cc with a 360 crank that I couldn't make sound loud and triumphy i needed to look at the fuelling and other things to get that,
I bought a stainless steel exhaust with removable baffles in the mufflers even straight through it sounded like nothing definitely not loud I'll send you this link to my go to website for bike specs on any bike this link is for a t100 but the 900 270 degree crank Triumph Bonneville T100 Black earlier versions had the 360 crank this comes with a reasonable grunty sound but can easily be decatted and an x pipe in place of it . this came out in 2016 the ecu self learns when you change exhaust no tweeking of carbs didnt have to do anything to ,mine just let it idle for about 10 mins

I bought a used 2005 Thruxton about three years ago, my first motorcycle. Specifically looked for a carb model. I’m 62 as well and tinker a lot on my vehicles. Just wanted something that recalled the past and was reminiscent of the motorcycles I grew up seeing and never had. Can’t say fuel injected is a bad choice, but I do love my carb model.

I am an old guy, been riding for years, all my bikes have had carbs. I understand carbs. I don't need a computer to change things in the tune etc. I however do all of my own work unless machining is involved.
It is definitely the old school approach. So, that is my bias. I had a 70 Bonneville back in 1974-76. I loved the bike but eventually sold it and bought older Harleys. 2 of which I still ride, one has a sidecar.

My 2007 that I have now has the same basics the 1970 had: 360-degree crank for the classic Triumph sound, Air Cooled, Carbs and not EFI & fuel pump. No catalytic convertor. Perfect blend of old and "new" in that it has a counter balanced engine, electronic ignition, better carbs, disc brakes and electric start.

The 2001 is a true Made in England bike, before the fire. Simple bike. Smaller and prettier
gas tank because of lack of a fuel pump. Also, I know many riders like the 790 better than the 865.

The 2013 bike has everything the 2001 has but EFI with an electric fuel pump, a catalytic converter
and a slightly larger engine.

I'd ride them both, drive a hard bargain and buy the one that speaks to you regardless of price.

Consider also, the price of new tires, battery etc. Maybe different seat and pipes. It adds up quick.
