Hey guys,

I'm a new rider (previous riding has been just dirtbikes/offroad) looking to get a T100. (I've lusted after them for as long as I can remember!)

I commute by public transit, so the T100 will be more of an around-town, weekend rider for me. Probably not much in the way of highway trips.

The 2017 T100 is a good fit for me, size-wise (I'm a 5'5" petite woman), but I haven't checked out a 2016. I would of course like to save a little money if I can by going with a 2016, but want to make sure I wouldn't be giving up anything important on the 2017.

From a riding standpoint, I'd appreciate any insights about the differences between the two... I'm obviously interested any anything that might make for slightly more forgiving handling, or better for a beginner in general.

Appreciate your thoughts!

The T100 is a good all-around bike and very capable of road trips.
I haven't made a comparison between the '16 and '17, but off the top of my head I would consider the specs, along with size and weight, to be virtually identical.
I doubt that anyone here knows the specific differences (if any) without doing some research.

I suggest you Google both years and compare the specs.

Thank you! I've compared specs, and it didn't look like any changes, but I wasn't sure if there were any changes to things like symmetry or anything subtle like that that a newbie like me might miss... :)

Also, what sort of discount might you expect on a 2016? (Couple of dealers near me have several.)

I'm in Canada so I have no idea what discount a local dealer in your area might give you.
A one year leftover probably wouldn't be discounted that much, but the best thing to do is negotiate and pay in full if you can.

As I suspected, and as you have learned, the two years are all but identical.
Triumph had already made sweeping changes with the new models so future changes would be few.

So, it appears I was confused in my initial understanding of the different model years. The sweeping changes to the Bonneville line were applied to all the 2016 models except the T100. The T100 was updated in the 2017 model year. So the 2016 T100 is the previous air-cooled model, with none of the other recent updates.

Given that, I'd love any impressions from someone who might have ridden and compared the 2016 and 2017 T100. (It does seem, based on several of the reviews I'd read, that some of the updates could be advantageous in terms of handling/rideability for a beginner like me, but I'd love to hear thoughts from anyone who's ridden both, as the price difference is not insignificant.)

thanks!

Isn't the 2016 the older air cooled 865cc engine and the 2017 the newer water cooled 900cc?
I know the older air cooled Bonnie was a pretty bullet proof engine.
The newer T 100 is the Street Twin engine in the T 120 frame, minus a few bells and whistles. If you fit the T 100 then the T 120 will/should be the same if you want or require the added features.

Q and Cep55, you're absolutely right and I hang my head in shame FACE
I didn't realize that the T100 model wasn't upgraded in 2016. I just assumed all models were upgraded.
I apologize to Cep55 for steering her wrong. I should have researched the subject before opening my big mouth.

I've owned the 865cc air cooled T-100 model for many years and it just runs and runs and runs. You certainly can't go wrong with the fuel injected 2016 model.
It has everything you would want in a Bonneville model unless you want the small increase in cc's, some extra bells and whistles and water cooling.

How a motorcycle handles is quite subjective and depends on how hard you ride. If you're just a regular every-day rider then the factory suspension should be fine.
Those that push the limits would probably find fault with the factory suspension.

I doubt that anyone here has actually ridden and compared both - but I've been wrong before FACE

I'm in the same boat, Cep55. I'm trying to figure out whether to buy a '17 T100 or a leftover '16. Locally, you can get a leftover '16 for about $7500 plus $700 destination charge, pre-haggling, so that's a substantial discount from the sticker price, especially after you figure in the MSRP increase for the /17s.

The big difference on the '17s, feature-wise, is the air cooling and the ABS, but I'm curious about the handling differences, too, and I've scoured the net and not found any sort of good comparison, or even a particularly insightful review of the 2016 T100. Lots of raves for the new models, though.

I'm hopefully going to the launch of the new Bonneville Bobber and the new T100 Street Cup ( daft name for a bike ) and the Street scrambler, this Thursday evening, I hope to be able to get some decent photo's of the bikes, it might help you to decide whether to get an old style T100 of the new style T100.
