Hi Guys, what a day I had yesterday!
Left home at 6.30am to catch the train to London. Arrived at Euston at 10.15am, hopped on the underground to Waterloo, then onto the Southern train to Surrey. I arrived there at 12 noon. The guy I was buying the bike from met me at the station, and off we went to his house. The bike was a beauty!

He showed me round it, how to start it etc, all the paperwork was in order, did the deal and set off.
The bike was real smooth and crisp. Got on the M25 to get around London, had done about 50 miles cruising along in heavy traffic when there was an almighty screeching noise from the engine and it died! Had to do a quick shuffle from lane 2 to the hard shoulder whilst free-wheeling!
Had a look around, nothing obvious except a small puff of smoke from the breather pipe. Tried to kick her over and it was solid!
Bugger! or words similar to that!

Phoned the guy back and without hesitation he said get it back to me and I will refund your money.
So I phoned the AA, I have been a member for 26yrs and this is the first time I had called on them. They arranged a recovery vehicle but said it would be 1 1/2hrs before he arrived. So did a bit of sun bathing on the embankment next to the motorway until he arrived.
The recovery eventually arrived, the little bike trailer folded out the back of his van!

It then took us 2hrs to get back through traffic to the guys house.
When we arrived the guy had been on line and arranged my train tickets back home, refunded my money, and gave me £100 for my inconvenience! A true gentleman!
He then took me to the station, It was a bit of a mad rush because if I missed the 17.25 train back to London I would miss the last train home.
Just made the train, got back to London, and caught train home. And just to add insult to injury, the train was fully booked and I had to stand all the way home, 3hrs!
So I eventually arrived home at 22.30, a 16hr day I do not want to repeat in a hurry!
I am not sure what was wrong with the bike, I think it seized and the screeching noise was the primary chain stripping the teeth of the sprocket!

Wot a shame
It sure was a good looking bike
And you did real well getting your money and expenses back, after all, usually when you buy something of that age its buyer beware.
:y18:

wow I can't believe the guy did all that for you. That wouldn't happen around here I can tell you!

So apart from a day out you didn't come out short. Hey - it could've been worse, you might have had to stand next to the bike in the rain for an hour anna half. lol

you still looking around for another buy?

...

Oh man, so sorry to hear that ! i can't imagine first ride and that happens. but thank god the guy is doing a refund. You got very lucky there i think. even if you have a sort of lemon law that covers it still a lot of people would resist and you'd have to take them to court and go thru all this BS. So good thing he's standing up.
i had a '78 tiger that seized. I was so friggin' disapointed because it happened not long after i got it and it loved that bike. It too seized on the freeway. Not a pleasant experience to be sure.

Just reading that story made me tired. Bummer you had all that trouble Gump, but as people have already commented..... a blessing in disguise. If you have any change left over, I'd send it back to the guy. :ya2:

I don't think the AAA here in the States will deal with a broken down motorcycle....only cars and trucks.

I'm amazed also that the guy didn't just tell you that the sale was final.

I suppose it was better that it happened immediately like that and not a Month from now.

At least you got some time to leisurely take-in some Sun.

Gump, I am so sorry the bike did not work out for you. It surely looks good in the photos. You are blessed that the seller was a standup, honest gentleman. If you like that bike, you might followup with him and repurchase it once repairs are done - or buy it as is and rebuild the engine. If it didn't throw a rod and the caes are good, that might be the way to go.

Just got an e-mail from the seller, he has had the primary cover off and it would seem it was just the alternator disintegrating!
He is offering to fix it and come to an arrangement to have it delivered up to me, now I don't know what to do!

I would make him an offer as is and fix it myself or have a knowledgeable Triumph guy do it and look over the rest of the engine in the process. If the rest of the bike is sound, the alternator is relatively minor.

If you like the bike and feel he will repair it properly, go for his offer.

Thanks for all the words of advice guys, it is appreciated.
I have been speaking to a friend of mine who is something of a Triumph expert. (He has a collection of over 20 Triumph's dating back to 1930!)
I showed him the photo's and he thinks that the rotor threw a magnet and wrecked the alternator, and he thinks it is an easy fix. When I said it seized, it did not lock up when I was riding, the engine cut out, when the screeching started, but it was still turning. I pulled the clutch and freewheeled to a standstill. It was only then that It would not kick over. I think the reason it would not kick over is the magnet is lodged in the alternator windings.
I have been giving this some thought since it happened, asked myself the 'Clint Eastwood' question, 'do I feel lucky?'
and the answer is yes. Lucky that it happened straight away, lucky that the seller is an A1 bloke, and lucky to get my money back.
So I am talking to the seller about his offer of repairing it and delivering it to me.
I will keep you posted!

Well Gump, my opinion for what it is worth.
Dont try and snag a bargain or beat the man down.
You were obviously happy with the original deal, and the seller proved to be beyond reproach.
If he offers to repair it properly, and sell it to you at the same price as before, then how could you possibly ask for more.
If the bike still floats your boat then you should buy it.

That was exactly what I was thinking Devo!
