I spoke to the young lads father this morning and he's still in the hospital, but doing fine.
The bike is at the Kawasaki dealership being assessed for writeoff or repair.
He has no pictures of the bike after it was removed from the SUV, but even if it is repaired I don't think I would want to ride it again.
There could be hidden problems from the crash that might show up later.

I agree with AJ's assessment. It is clearly the drivers fault. I know from experience that sometimes a glance in the mirrors is not enough. But it can be enough to get you out of the way.
