Monday, May 27th is Memorial Day (Decoration Day) in the US. It is a national holiday set aside to honor those who gave their lives in service to the country. I have friends and family who died in service. I salute them and thank them for their sacrifice for our freedom. I will be attending ceremonies at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell and traveling to St Augustine to put a flag on my son's grave.

Memorial Day is also the unofficial start of the summer vacation season.

I will set aside a minutes silence and some time for thought for what has been give.
If it was not for the USA. In Europe they would all be speaking German and in Australia and China , it would be Japanese.
How soon people forget.!

Although our Remembrance Day is a different time, we fought alongside our American neighbors during many conflicts. I will take a moment of silence during the 27th to honour our fallen brothers and sisters.

Thank you, Chris. And you are spot on!

Yes we all need to remember those that gave it all for the rest of us.
Amen!!

It really warmed my heart when I learned that a flag pole that had fallen down due to age at a local village cenotaph, was going to be replaced from money that a bunch of high school students had raised on their own initiative just for that purpose.
Good on them TUP TUP
That is truly heart warming!

Thank you, Steve. I will certainly be remembering the fallen of our Allies.

Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service. In observance of Memorial Day, fly the United States flag at half staff from sunrise until NOON , and then raise it to full height from noon to sundown.

United States Flag Code
Section 7.M

The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then slowly lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff.

Because of the coming anniversary, there are some TV documentaries about the terrible allied losses in Europe and in the Pacific.
I watched one recently that concentrated on the Normandy grave sites and later the Pacific.
You know the numbers are high, but when the grave pictures are shown and the voice-over spells out the numbers, it boggles the mind and rips at your heart. It's really hard to absorb such sacrifices and it really shakes you up a bit.
There were many views of the graves from the air and that's when you are so shocked and can only think, OMG....OMG!!!

Sadly. you are so right!
Germany didn't get a chance for democracy, they had a king ( by another name ). Who was dethroned and Madmen took over.
Japan had a frail Empire , rapped in Blood and Sanctions and punched under Doctorial Armed Forces.
Masses , were hypnotised , brutalised and seen as of no consequence.

I think we did learn , but not everyone.

This is how I understand it...and a solute the fallen and the brave.
