With a heavy heart, I announce the passing of J. Thomas (Tom) Rowell, 56, United States Navy Viet Nam Veteran and Patriot Guard Rider Ride Captain Tom's family has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to stand in silent honor of their hero at services for him. Tom was one of those rare individuals who touched the lives of all he met. He was a selfless, caring person.

Tom was a personal friend and Suzie, his widow, and Mae Lyne are friends. Tom and I traveled to Gathering of Eagles 1 in Washington, DC together two years ago. GOE was a massive counter protest against the anti-war protesters. I had never been able (emotionally) to visit the Viet Nam Memorial Wall even though I had been to DC many times since the memorial was built. Tom escorted me to the Wall; he said I needed to go. He and I cried on each others shoulders. I could not have visited it without his encouragement and support. You vets will know exactly what I mean.

Tom, you will be missed. Rest in peace, Brother.

I have stood with Tom in Flag lines, ridden with him, and broken bread with him on numerous occasions. He had an infectious grin; when you met him, you liked him instantly. Tom was kind, caring , compassionate and selfless. I will really miss riding beside his electric blue Goldwing, his grin, and his friendship.

I am stunned and hurting to the core. Tom was a good man.
