Hot Pipes ..

I've been thinking about the hot pipes and wondered if this would be a cheaper solution to de-catting the headers.

In the picture above of my bike the area marked in red is approximately where my leg would be with the blue area having the heat problem. The heat seems to be mainly on the inside of my leg so it appears that the cat may not be the main problem........it's the pipes leaving the cat

The picture below shows the exhaust system without the heat shields. Again the red box indicated the approximate leg position. If the blue area (as marked below) was wrapped with heat proof exhaust wrap, do you think that the heat to the leg would be drastically reduced. Would there be any need to wrap the cat?

Many thanks

I've been in contact with TEC Triumph here in the UK and they say the pipes here reduce in diameter and get very hot. They think that wrap here will reduce the heat on the riders leg so I've placed an order.

I think there will be enough to wrap the cat as well if I decide to

I've just received this warning on another forum about wrapping the exhaust

DO NOT PUT EXHAUST WRAP ON YOUR BIKE ,

it smokes like *!$* till it has cured ,

and this is the killer ....

it will ruin the finish of you pipes when you take it off,

you might think your pipe is stainless .... it isn't.

I've done some research on Google and the above seems to be the popular consensus.

Maybe not one of my better ideas!

Looks like the de-cat is the best way to go but I'd to see a bike in the flesh, after a run before I part with my 'ard earned'

wrappin a pipe can cause heat fatigue! not sure about the 1200 but a magnet DONT stick to my STAINLESS pipes on the SS, guards etc prolly not but the pipe ARE!!

If TEC Triumph in UK doesn't have a problem with the wrap I would still go for it. Once you put it on you are not likely to take it off and potential esthetics is minor to safety in my opinion.

I ordered the Zard defat header and was thinking about then just wrapping the pipe bits that are hidden by the heat shields just for good measure.. (not wrapping any exposed pipe, just the part near my leg). Is that unnecessary overkill?

As smoking, new, tape seems normal, I don't care if it smokes for a ride or two.. However it it keeps smoking forever that would be an issue.. :-P That, or I could paint the bike red and put a devil tail on it..

I doubt the wrap will smoke forever. My turbo wrap smoked just about 20 minutes and nothing after. There's turbo blankets which might fit under that shield. It will also smoke at first.
