For the past two weeks I've been staying at my daughter's house outside of town caring for her pets while they're away on a trip.
They have satellite TV and while I was scrolling through the hundreds of channels available I came upon "Silver Screen Classics" - old American and British movies from decades ago - mostly in black and white, but some in colour.
As I scanned through the schedule I found Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassidy movies from the 1935 - 1940 era. The days here are a bit long so I've been watching a couple of these old movies every day.
It takes me back to when I was a kid in the Forties and grew up on the old western movies and the cowboy heroes of the day.
Back in those days we would only get to town once a month and the treat was to see a Roy Rogers or Gene Autry movie.
Comic books were only 10 cents so I was also allowed to buy the latest issue of either a Roy or Gene comic.
Life was pretty simple back then.

I remember those westerns and the 10 cent comic books well. I also remember the serials at the movies that preceded the news reel and the main feature. Life was, indeed, a lot more simple. I, too, am glad I grew up in the late 40's and the 50's.

Yep, we had those serials and US movies also down under.
In the mid 50's when I was considered old enough to go to the "pictures" with friends I'd be given 1 shilling (= 12 pence, today 10cents). That got me threepence to get into peanut alley, threepence for an ice cream and sixpence for enough mixed lollies to make any kid sick.
Gee my kids hate to hear that story (over and over and over).

Did I tell you about how much it cost to get into the pictures back in my day.....
