I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned this before, but I have an older Brother.

He and I are like the difference between day and night in ever possible way

So he calls me and wants to get my opinion on buying a scooter today. He wants me to go shopping for one with him and says he won't buy anything I don't personally recommend.

He does still have a motorcycle license, but hasn't ridden a bike since around 1970....... and that was a Honda CB350. I've always considered him a horrible driver whether it be on a bike or car. I cringe if I ever have to ride in a car with him and I WON"T ride within 25 miles of him on a bike! He hasn't a clue about the difference between putting the wrong fluids in the wrong reservoir unde the hood. The funny part is just imagining him on a scooter wearing a suit and tie :y114: I forgot to mention that he's a pathologist which makes it even funnier!

Anyhow, I'm recommending the Honda Silver Wing 600. It may sound like it has more engine that really needed, but in a year or two he'd be trading-up for more power anyhow I'm sure. It's got an automatic gearbox so it should be fairly tame. I'd say it's pretty top of the line as far as scooters go.

Well it certainly looks good but I have never been a big one on scooters. What sort of price are you looking at for something like this.

That soot picture looks really cool - like riding a lounge suit to work :y114:

Oops I mean scoot :y115:

I have a friend who bought one of those not long ago. He was looking at one of the Suzuki Boulevard bikes (used) but went with the new Silverwing instead. He's a portly fellow, so the "step-through" style suits him just fine. He regularly rides in a group with folks on Japanese cruisers and has no troubles.

I know another fellow that road Gold Wings since they came out. An avid biker and iron butt rider.

He too traded his Gold Wing for a Silver Wing last Summer and loves it. He's ridden it to Florida and New Mexico from here. These 600s have plenty of power to cruise the open highways with any cruiser.

As far as my Brother goes.....I actually never asked him WHY. The pricetag with ABS is $8,599.00 USD. The fuel economy is about 50 Miles per US Gallon.

Nice idea this :y115:,
My very first road bike was a 1982 500 silverwing, worst bloody bike I ever rode or owned - this looks a bit different what. I sure hope it does better than it's old dog name-sake. Nice idea for someone who's not realy a serious biker, espescially considering what the petrol prices are up to.

Careful what you say about "portly fellows". Farside & BignDaft AND RAFIKI might take offense. But you should see them on my little scoot! :y24: :y24: :y24:

The old SilverWing was based on the CX V-twin with one cylinder sticking up at an angle on either side like a Moto Guzzi.

The Suzuki Bergman is very similar to this new Honda, except that i don't think they have an automatic model.

They are not really to be trifled with, as they are capable of above-legal speeds. Those little tires, at those speeds, are certainly enough to keep you focused. If you've never ridden a scooter at speed, it's more scary than on a regular bike.

This is something that would worry me big time on one of those things, the tiny wheels. I road an old Vespa back in the 80’s and that was scary enough for me for a lifetime :silent:

that is about the same price as a Bonnie and the same fuel mileage, too, I'd much rather ride a Bonnie.

I rode a Lambretta back in the late 50's and I do not like those small wheels. They are scary.

Well, he bought it and I rode it home for him as he was a bit timid to ride on the Interstate until he gets used to biking again. Or, he just didn't trust me to drive his brand new Mercedes???

Anyhow, I was cruising at 85 MPH for miles before I realized how fast I was going. It's got plenty of power and rides as smooth as silk. I could actually get used to one of those things pretty easily! For having an automatic transmission, I was amazed at how quickly it could get up to speed...at least as fast as most modern autos on the road. It was also very stable feeling even at high speeds and around 18 wheelers. The automatic doesn't seem to have "gears" that it shifts thru , but more like a variable speed tranny 'cause you never felt it upshift or downshift at all (nor did the tach show any gear changes).

The Honda dealer threw in a helmet and a back rest for both front and pillion seats for free. It was like riding a laz-e-boy reclining chair down the highway.

You just stretch you legs out into that forward indentation in the fairing and it feels great. The wind is deflected perfectly. You can also open and adjust air vents in the fascia. Cavernous locking storage compartments.

The only drawback for me was that my arms were bent at the elbow more than to my liking. I wish I could adjust the bars forward a couple of inches.

EDIT: One other complaint is that the front forks could use some firming-up, I didn't see if there was any adjustment or not......the rear shocks have 6 adjustment levels. If I owned one, I'd be tearing into those forks and seeing what could be done to stiffen them if no adjustment is provided.

Sounds impressive, are you sure it's for your brother? it's ok you can tell us.
