Just bought. 2007 America and I find that when engaging the clutch it doesn’t start to engage until the lever is almost completely released. Is this normal? It makes for rough start out in 1st gear. How can I adjust it? I read the manual but it was not clear. Am I trying to make the cable shorter or longer? Turn the adjustment knob clockwise or counter clockwise?

My Tiger is like that, but it's hydraulic, so no adjustment there. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be by design. Hopefully with the link, Greyfell posted you can get some clarity and adjusted the way you like.

Thanks guys, maybe I described it wrong. When I’m at a stop light with the clutch lever fully gripped and in 1st gear, when I go to move, I don’t start to move until the lever is almost all the way released. None of my other bikes were like that. The bike should start moving at least when it’s half way released. It seems like the thread that Greyfell recommended the guy had the opposite issue.

Try turning the adjuster at the handle bar until there is just a few threads not showing . Try that out . If that gets the clutch engagement at place with the lever close
to or against the grip your headed in the right direction . Then screw the adjustment back towards it’s original position until you find a happy medium spot where the clutch engages at a place you like and hopefully starts engaging when the lever is half an inch or so from the grip . Keep screwing around till you find what seems like the perfect spot . If you have more than a few threads showing at the lever adjuster get rid of the extra threads by going to the other end of the cable and adjusting , more tension on the exposed inner cable , by loosening and turning the small nuts . Having the bar adjuster showing almost all the threads looks bad and is a sign that the clutch is well worn or the cable stretched severely . A new cable will no doubt be a much cheaper option .
Keep me in the loop

You are pulling too much clutch.

This is also a very common misconception. I have been riding 20+ yrs and I only recently learned this in the last few years.
How many fingers are you using? Do you "Full Fist" grab it? I Do use 3 to 4 fingers, but have learned the "sweet spot". The one just at the point of disengage and slipping to full engage.

You have adjusters on the handle and at the case. However your clutch should just be the firs 1/2 inch. What you describe is the way its supposed to be. Get in a lot of practice with your let outs. You dont need to pull the clutch any further than it needs to disengage.
Here are some good vids.

*NOTE* as far as adjusting the position, he is on a sport bike, the America mirror doesn't like moving to that angle for the hand position, but you can make it better.

Play with the adjustment. Wind the adjusters in then out until it releases at the point you are happy with. Remember to leave about 5mm of free movement that does nothing otherwise you will wear your clutch as it will be activated all the while you are riding.
