I knew what you meant because I often say the same thing about where I live.
My city isn't as well known as San Francisco, but If I said I was from Bedford, Armdale, etc., people wouldn't have a clue, however might recognize the name Halifax.
Even so the British name of my city can be found in Australia, England, Canada and more than half a dozen places in the U.S.

Well, nearly everybody knows about San Francisco, and San Francisco Bay. But there are over 40 cities surrounding the bay, and most of us would not want to live in San Francisco, even if we could afford it . And, too, people outside of this area would not know what part of California I was talking about if I said I was from Concord, Danville, Millbrae or Fremont, etc. So, we get in the habit of identifying the geographic entity that everyone will recognize, and infer that we live very close to that entity. In my case, I live 25 mile away from San Francisco, in the town of Pleasant Hill.

Does that help clear your confusion? (I do tend to wordiness, now and then )

I must have just turned the corner and you missed me.
So many British place names came over to NA with those brave souls who populated this continent and faced unbelievable hardship just to survive.
Just in the province alone we have Windsor, Bridgewater, Chester, Sydney, Yarmouth, Liverpool, Digby, just to name a few.
