How important is Handlebar comfort to you when you ride? I find for myself it is really becoming more and more important as I get older and am feeling those old hand and wrist injuries.

So what say all of you since this is part of fine tuning and or tweaking our personal bikes for the utmost comfort. TUP
 
Comfortable bars are very important if you ride more than to the corner bar. I've been lucky, the aftermarket bars that were on my Tiger when I bought it, fit near perfect. I might could tweak them a little but why mess with something that fits so well.

Ya with my Rigid Bobber which will be a daily rider plus more comfort is the real key. I have had so many hand and wrist injuries over the years I did construction. The Paughco bars I just bought with a 4" pull back are good enough until I get my custom bars made. Even my GF can see what I am talking about when I was holding my news bars and she could see the handlebar end was not the same as the outside angle on my hands. I will probably be looking at a 3" to3 1/2" pull back flat drag bar made custom. I will have to go down and also allow the custom fabricator to see what I mean too.

Ya this post is not aimed at the bar hopper, short rider, casual rider crowd but at the daily rider crowd who know how much comfort counts so your hands do not go to sleep on you. Wrist injuries plus Carpal Tunnel hurt. SAD
 
Maybe I am just too basic with a lot of tweak on my bikes. The only time I have changed bars was to go from upright to drops. I don't even do any changes to my bars and ride any bike I get as is and just mould myself into what ever style it presents.
 
i know were your coming from ....ive had a lot of hand finger and wrist injuries over the years ( forestry , steel errecting , builder ) and the bars are always the first thing i change .
i like hemi have been lucky with my tiger the after market bars fitted to it are just about right .
 
Medical corner ... my right index finger was saved by a good surgeon but has little feeling and low blood flow makes it cold when the others are still OK. Right wrist now works again after surgery but my right shoulder has been rebuilt twice and still keeps me awake at night SAD. Not going to talk about the bad back and balance problems.

So, yes I understand that one must set a bike up for your conditions and limitations. I did get lucky with my Street Triple R in that it's not too bad in std trim. Three bikes back I had a Honda VTR 1000 F, loved it but sold because I was hurting too much when and after riding.
 
thats why i sold my trophy .. it just used to hurt my wrists so bad that i had to stop every 50 miles or so to rest them, i loved that bike but the bars were at a terrible angle for me .
 
The factory handlebars on both of my modern bikes fit me well, but I changed the bars on both of my vintage bikes to those with more rise and pull back. The short bars that came on the bikes put too much weight on my wrists.
By all means, change the bars. All day comfort is what you're looking for.
 
Handlebar comfort is very important to me as I do a lot of riding and distance riding. I have changed handlebars on nearly every bike I have owned and I am going to change them on my XC. I need just a little more pull back than the stock bars give.
 
Ya after sitting on my bike yesterday I might look at a 1/2" or a 1" pull back type Riser now for my Rigid. Gotta get her out on the road first. It is almost right on the money. So close and I mean it is just so close.
 
Ride it a bit before you change it. Sometimes the feel is just different and after you get used to it, you end up liking it. I'd ride at least 1000 miles before I'd make a major change.
 
Ya I planned on that. There will be some adjustments as time goes on. My builder yesterday was talking about getting used to the Springer front end. I kindly explained to him that I used to be a Concrete Laborer and since nobody else on the crews I worked on liked running the "Jumping Jack" dirt compactor that I always got the job since I did not mind running it at all. He smiled and said "Well Stud then you will be right at home" TUP

I have had everything from clip-ons to outrageous chopper bars.
The only hand & arm problems I have had are when I have come off....far too often when I was racing.:y148:
 
I have a simple tip to help remove the vibrations from the handle bars that cause numness in the hands on long trips, well it works for me.
Remove handle bar and fill them with your general purpose silicone sealer wait 48 hours before assembly and use, works a charm for me.
