this morning the young girl who lives just down the estate road from me (who has just started riding her suzuki 125 rn,her dad rides a 1999 bonnie ) came off her bike , she was turning in to the estate and slid on some gravel .
so i went down to collect the bike for her as she couldn't start it after her fall , i managed to start it and rode it back for her .
not much damage really both indercater lenses , bent gear leaver, bent bars and bent clutch lever about £65 worth of damage.
any way she was wearing full gear (good stuff not cheap ! ) but she was in pain !
she showed me the base of her back red raw  with gravel rash despite the gear and not a mark any where else!.
i suddenly realised why ! and i do it my self, and i dont now anybody that does do it .
most gear comes with a zipper on the back of the jacket and one on the back of the trousers so you can zip them together , if she had done that no gravel rash !
so i guess what im trying to say is everything on your gear is put there for a reason , and to get the full benefit from it it should all be used ! even if it is a pain to get to.
it will save a lot of pain later :y2:

A very good point and I don't zip the jacket to the trousers either. When I had my get off, I had a spot of pavement rash at the top of my right hip where the the jacket rode up. It was about the size of a quarter. Had I had the jacket zipped to the pants, I would not have gotten it.

as i say ! im just as guilty as the next man or woman for taking no notice of the zips on the back, but after seeing the mess on that poor young girl , i think i will start to use them.
i think that is one of the only down sides of fabric gear, it grabs the road and rides up !

I, too, cringe when I see folks riding in tee shirts, tank tops, shorts and sandles. Here it is not just on scooters; you see it on sport bikes and cruisers, too.

A couple of years ago I was on my bike waiting for a traffic light on a four-lane boulevard. I was going to make a left turn and was looking up and down the cross street (scanning) as I always do.
Coming down the street and obviously going to make the turn to my left onto the four-lane boulevard was half a dozen bicyclists in a tight pack and moving along at high speed. They were hardcore types dressed in bright bicycle fashions with bare knees and arms and riding fancy bicycles.
The streets intersect at right angles and as I saw them lean into the corner to make the turn I knew that at the speed they were going they would never make it on those tiny tires.
Sure enough, the first guy went down followed by 3-4 others. A couple managed to not crash.
When I saw all that bare flesh sliding across the hot asphalt, a cold chill ran through my body. It's a terrible feeling to know such a thing was going to happen and you're powerless to do or say anything about it.
But everyone got up and walked to the curb and I went on my way.
At the speed they were going I wouldn't even try to do the same thing on a motorcycle with sticky tires. You simply can't make such a manouver without slowing down.
