2016 Speed Triple S
Four months ago, our spy shots (see SPIED: 2016 Triumph Speed Triple) gave us all a clear view of the Hinckley-based company’s streetfighter in training. Numerous styling changes were evident in that pre-production Speed Triple and we were told to expect a redesigned engine for 2016 that would deliver “a fraction” more horsepower than the outgoing model.
Today, Triumph unveiled the new 2016 Speed Triple S and R models with a focus on the new 1,050cc triple engine featuring 104 new developments. No power claims were provided but Triumph says that the changes combine to deliver more power and, more importantly, more torque across the whole rev range with an expected increase of up to 10 percent improvement in fuel efficiency. These developments include a new combustion chamber, new cylinder head, new machined crank, new piston design and new ‘Ride-by-Wire’ throttle bodies. Additional developments also include a slip assist clutch, smaller, more efficient radiator and a new free-flowing exhaust that has a 70-percent increase in flow rate.

2016 Speed Triple R
The new Speed Triple S and Speed Triple R also feature a suite of rider-focused technology. Among the features that add to the Speed Triple’s performance and capability are a new ECU coupled to a new, adjustable ride-by-wire throttle with selectable maps. There are now five distinct riding modes to choose from: Road, Rain, Sport, Track and a new Rider Configurable mode, that all allows the rider to set-up the motorcycle to the optimum performance relative to road conditions or environment.
New styling, which we were expecting from our spy shots, include all-new twin headlamps and bodywork with a new Daytona 675R-inspired tail piece. But not so apparent is a significantly narrower engine and radiator package providing a 20mm narrower stand-over width. Pricing has not been announced yet but we expect to know more following the upcoming EICMA and Long Beach IMS shows. Expect to see the new Speed Triples in dealers by early February.
