I love the new external oil filter and especially love its appearance. The only thing I do not like about it is the location. I am going to cal Ozzie about this to get his opinion. I also would like your as well. It is located in a position that when I put the right side outer cover on, I have to lift it up a little in front because the bottom of the cover hits the oil filter about half way up. I would like for the cover to fit in its normal location. I could change the cover to the old style but really don't want to do that because I want the bike to be as stock as possible. The electric start system, rar belt drive and external oil filter are about as rad as I want it to be. I need to move it but have not looked closely to see the best location. Any suggestions? I am enclosing a picture of the oil filter where it is presently located.

I don' t know your fabrication skills, but Gump's location is really awesome.

If not there, then the only place I can think of would be between the front downtubes of the frame. It's hard to tell from a picture exactly how big your filter is and how well it would fit there, but it's an idea.

The only possible downside I can think of might be the heat. Plus, you would still need to make some type of mounting bracket. It's pretty easy to find a couple of those chromed muffler straps with pre-drilled holes in them.

Avion, you made my day. I loved your comment. It is actually the cylinder with the screw on the side and the bolt head on top with the two hoses attached to the top. It is right above the lever thing used to start it, except for the fact that I don't have to use the lever thing to start it anymore since it has an electric starter. Please don't ask me where this is.:y2:.

Guys, I have decided to locate it on the front of the frame above where the engine is bolted to the frame. I will either weld a bracket across the two frame tubes or mount a bracket using some sort of clamp. I had actually rather do this because it makes it easier to remove. Welding a bracket across there might create problems later on removing the engine when I decide to rebuild it. What do you think?

I'd go with Carl's idea since welding anything means you have to removed the paint and then repaint it when you're done.

The only downside is that heat coming off of the oil filter housing then moves to your cylinder heads. But I doubt the heat will be that significant.

Carl, I gave you U bolt idea some serious thought. I actually did not want to weld anything across the front because this may have created more problems than it was worth. I have decided to actually make an aluminum bracket (using 1/4" x 1" aluminum) that will go across the top of the front motor mount with legs on each side extending downand attaching to the front motor mount bolt (one leg on each side). I will have to get a bolt 1/2" longer than what is on there now. I will weld a plate to the front of this bracket and mount the external oil filter to this plate. Since the oil filter opens from the top this will make it easier to change out the filter as well as remove the entire assembly if and when I decide to rebuild the engine, plus it is in front where the air can cool it. I will use (as someone else on another forum suggested) use 1/4" thick syrofoam and mock it up before I make the aluminum one to make sure it fits as it should. I will definately take pictures once it is finished and mounted. Thanks for all of your ideas. Avion, have you found the filter in the picture yet? If not, Here's Your Sign and Dave will send you a T-Shirt.:y2:

I think your solution is spot on. Any bolt on arrangement is preferable to welding. TUP

I cannot. My brother-in-law does MIG, TIG, etc. but I will never get him to do this for me. he would eventually get around to it but I want it now and not a year from now, so I had rather pay someone else to do it. My cousin owns a bike and auto body shop. He does the painting for a bunch of custom bikes and show cars. He has a friend who has a machine shop who does a lot of the fabrication work for those custom bikes, so once I mock up what I need we are going to see the guy and get him to make this bracket.

Seeker, I have an old AC welder and a wire welder. I would even settle for a DC welder. Have you ever used one? My brother-in-law has one at home and he did let me use it. It has a reverse polarity that allows you to weld vertically up and down, upside down, as well as any other angle. It is almost like soldering. Very smooth. Minimal sticking. His other welders are at his business and unless it is necessary I never go there.
