The Joker
Changing the sprag clutch on a 98 Sprint Executive (c.l. find) am perplexed by the tooth gear numbers

current ratio is 51 tooth sprag, 15 tooth starter gear.

can I switch to a 53/13 ratio? Will this be more durable?

Will this fit?

Thanks from a newbie here

I believe that the replacements will be beefier than the originals.

This was a known weakness of those bikes.

The originals normally last at least 100,000 miles, so the replacements of the same size (yet beefed-up) should last at least another 120,000 miles.

I wouldn't second guess the ratios that the original engineers decided to use.

Thanks Seeker, I think you are right.

Better NOT to try and "improve" on original engineering sometimes. This bike has 98,000 miles.
If I get that or more from the new sprag I will be THRILLED :ya2:

From what I've heard, the replacements are heavier duty than what came on the bike from the factory.....so I'd say you'll wear out the entire motor before you'll need to do this job again.

I had to replace the sprag on my '94 Sprint. Triumph went through four redesigns before they got it right. I know you should stick with the same ratio that the bike came with. I also thought that by '98 they had the latest. 98,000 miles isn't so bad, I only got 30,000 out miy early one.

Thanks, yes I have decided to not tempt fate.

If 98,000 miles was achieved with the original then I should have no worries with the replacement, same sized (why reinvent the wheel) sprag going forward.

Thanks All.

Will let you know the outcome.

Well don't that beat all.....ordered the 51 tooth sprag (just like the old one I pulled out) and it came yesterday. Nicely packed from Triumph, 51 th spr. cl. sticker right on the wrapping.
Started to install today, couldn't get her to fit.....seemed just a hair to big......(some of the brighter ones may see this coming).....well
After 45 min., I decided to count the teeth, and .......wait for it.........yep 53!

Package receipt everything say 51........

So back to the parts bin.

PLUS 1 lesson learned......when you are replacing a gear of any sort.......no matter what the package says........COUNT THE TEETH. :y115:

Bugger!

No actually it doesn't it makes me think it would fit......and cost a lot less......

Proper ratio
53 tooth sprag=11 tooth starter gear
51 tooth sprag=13 tooth starter gear.

So logically with the larger sprag, & the smaller starter gear i think it might all would have fit.

I currently have the 53/13 set up.....certainly doesn't fit.

Must say the Triumph Dealer in Ft. Lauderdale (Pure Triumph) did a bang up job of fixing the mistake.
Red labeled overnight Saturday Delivery the new PROPER size to me, and called to confirm its arrival.
At zero additional cost to me. Mounted up in minutes.....cheers to 'em :y18:

Now I just have some gaskets to arrive (back ordered from Triumph) and the Sprints engine will be whole again!

Hopefully by next weekend.

Just waiting on 1 for the sump. Giving them (dealer) the benefit of doubt (as they have been good to me to date) but Bikebandit.com has 'em if it takes more than a week.
I could use "seeler" only, but that sump is a very complicated part so I think the Triumph gasket is best.

STATUS REPORT
Well.....slow going due to divorce and other financial set backs.
HOWEVER, i do have the engine cases back the sump installed and have a week vacation coming in July to spend mostly gettin the engine back in the bike.

I am sure I will post up more and have numerous questions then.

Keep rolling!

Sorry to hear about the divorce. Divorces are most definitely BIG financial set backs. Unfortunately, I speak from experience.

Do keep us posted on your progress.

HEy Carl thanks for the "positive" sentiment. Actually I figure as long as I wake up breathing its a good day.

Start my vacation Friday......can't wait to get wrenching!!!!!

Will keep you posted.
