My 2007 T100 sometimes doesn`t want to downshift. The gear shifter feels like it`s not connected to anything. After a couple of trys it will work normal, doesn`t do all the time. I`m thinking the shift shaft might be getting worn. How involved is it to replace ? I`m a retired auto tech so not new to turning wrenches . I got a manual on the way. Any info would be helpful.
 
Could be the detent spring too. There have been instances of that breaking. Item #11 in the drawing.

I took the shift shaft cover off today and may have found my problem. A small spring was not in place , I didn`t see any reason for it to be unhooked unless it happened when the engine was changed. I`ll order a new gasket and will see what happens.I did find a problem of sorts. My bike has a newer fuel injected engine with my o.e carbs, I don`t know what year it is, possible a 2009. When I looked the shift shaft each year has a different part number, so that may make it hard to get the right one if needed. Can the engine serial number tell what year the engine is?

That’s definitely an oops. Glad you found it.

Went for a few miles on a test ride today, so far everything is working like it should. I`ll know for sure in the next few days.

Shifting good now. The spring was the return spring. Also solved the engine year problem, it`s a 2014 engine in my 2007 bike. Thanks to Phoenix Triumph for finding the info for me.
 
Good to hear it was a minor problem easily remedied. Years ago my brother Patrick had a shifting issue with his Virago while we were doing "Run For The Wall." That turned out to be just his clutch cable. Sometimes it's the simplest things.
 
Was it pretty easy to get to the shifter cover? Had anyone done work in that area or did the spring just pop off?
The cover is easy to remove , you do need to drain the oil. I got my T100 from a estate sale. So I don`t no it`s history. I didn`t no the engine had been changed , until I got it home and looked closer at it and saw that it had a speed sensor. Someone on one on a forum pointed out that it was a newer motor.
