When I used to marshal for these types of rallies the contestants have no idea where where they will come across a checkpoint. Now they need to reach that point at x time exactly if they have done their calculations correctly. Once they spot the marshals they are not allowed to stop the vehicle at all to try and correct their time. So you would have then coming over a blind rise seeing us applying brakes and going as slow as they could to kill some of their time. We would have a marshal further up the road that would walk next to them to make sure that the wheels were still rolling as they lost points on a stop at that point. They were real fun events to marshal
