68 years ago today was one of the most significant days in world history - D-Day (or Normandy Invasion). But 79 years ago today, the first drive in movie theatre opened. Google picked, as it always does, the fun and light hearted even to celebrate with a special Google logo, aka Doodle.

So get past the fact Google doesn't have a logo for D-Day. There is still the concern for some that Google does logos at all on days like today. That is not for me to decide, just to report based on complaints in the forums.

That being said, this Google Drive In Theater logo is pretty cool. It is an animated movie logo that you have to watch. Here is a video of it:

I was talking to some kids recently about WWII - what astounded me is how little they know about WWII, how it impacted global politics, science etc and how it impacts us today. 99% responded "That was not our time and we don't care what happened in Europe". Then I learnt that WWII is hardly taught in our government schools at all - thank goodness I am fortunate enough to have my son in a school that spent an entire year teaching WWII history! Liam has a whole new respect for his Granny thanks to the history he was taught.

Our history (UK) school syllabus stopped in 1914, just as it was all about to get interesting ANGER. I've used books, TV documentaries and the internet to learn about WWII.

Why I was born in the first place, why I speak English and not German and why I've never had to wear a uniform are the reasons why I have such a deep interest in WWII. I've studied it like no other historical event.

Dave, on the 50th anniversary of then of WWII, a fantastic coffee-table book was published - huge, massive volume beautifully bound etc. Definitely a period of history that holds a fascination for me too but I've no doubt you have far more knowledge that I do. I get really emotional about WWII and find I can only read so much at a time.

After watching one of the more recently made WWII documentaries on History Channel I was finished- completely emotionally drained.

Has anyone seen the documentary titled 'Hitler and the Occult'?

It is a fascinsting insight in to Nazi background beliefs from which one can draw some conclusions as to why the Nazis behaved the way they did and why they did some of the things they did. As I say, I found it fascinating- but it is also extremely dark and disturbing.

The funny thing is when I was a child I was also taught about WWI. Things sure have changed with the young ones these days. I also wonder how much they know about the wars in SA

My son posted this on his Facebook page. I was really touched when I saw this.................

Right Seeker - I just thought it was a pretty cool thing for a teenage boy in SA to post something quite clever in honour of the Armed Forces. I was also impressed to see how many of his friends did a copy/paste of this.

I don't think Liam composed it, I think he found it somewhere but I do like that he posted it.

Every Memorial Day and Veterans Day a group of my former high school classmates and I post that message. Another group of us from the afore mentioned group also post an edited version of it on November 10th each year.
