We've got coal, lots of it. An example; in the NW of the country is a 4GW thermal power station. It's a monster.

We are building an even bigger power station, 4.8GW, next to it. The local coal mine has reserves to power these two stations, which together will produce about 20-25% of the country's energy needs, for over 90 years. This one coal mine has estimated reserves of 2,800 Million tons.
 
I Googled the Eskom website; without the small gas & oil fired emergency stations, the installed generating capacity is 40.2GW. It's the 'missing' 5 or 6 gigawatts that's giving us the problem....:cry:
