Clifton, Cape Town: Clifton beach has something of a reputation with the trendy set in Cape Town and is a haven for international jetsetters. Together with its immaculate white sands and glistening water, their bronzing bodies and designer sunglasses grace Clifton’s 4th beach with sufficient glamour and eco-savvy to deserve not only the ‘see and be seen’ status it has acquired but its blue flag status as well. Clifton became famous in SA for being one of our first topless beaches. The price of property has gone through the roof and far more than any average South African can afford.

:y114: I had no real reason for posting this other than it may be of interest to you folks over the pond. If you ever do visit SA this would be one of the beaches that I would recommend. Stunning place to see :y18:

Yeah it is a great pity that we have to have such bad PR with the crime the way it is and nothing is really been done about it. However if you have a local that knows the areas it would not be that bad. I think it has become such a way of life for us that we just do things (security wise) that may be strange to outsiders.

However with it all I still love it here and would hate to have to leave but crime would be the one thing that may just make me do it.

I thought about that when replying to gromit's post too.

I'm sure if you lived there all along, as things slowly got worse crime-wise, you'd tend to become slowly conditioned to it, whereas someone from the outside would find it much more shocking.

Everything I've ever seen on TV of SA however looks like a beautiful place with a wide variety of landscapes.

Really cool to sit on the beach and watch the glides flying around.

Hey Dave don't be such a :y119: it is so much more fun to be in one especially flying over the sea.

I'm sure it (SA) is all stunning to see and I'd love to.

However, gromit's post about travel warnings tells me that unless I can bring an AR15 with me, I may shy away for now.

I don't know whether we're blind or what but every December me and the hubby take a bike trip through totally way out places in SA for about 3 weeks. We sit on road sides and mingle with the locals, have driven in the middle of a riot, go out of our way to meet the strangest people hanging out in the middle of nowhere. It is just the two of us, unarmed and vulnerable. NEVER have we felt threatened or ill at ease. Not a single person has even tried to steal our luggage. I think if you take the time to get to know the people, be friendly and open you see a different aspect to SA.

I think we have become accostomed to our lifestyle. I don't think we've become immune to the situation but we have adjusted along the way. As the crime situation worsened, our security efforts increased. Dave is right that travelling with a local makes a world of difference and Lioness is also right. In the outbacks and very small country spots - they're spots because they're so small they don't even make village status - the locals are great and more than hospitable. They also have loads of knowledge about the area and often point you in directions of the most out-of-the-way but incredibly beautiful areas. I'm just jaded this week - having a torrid time with the immigration authorities.
Can't wait to take off down to Mossel Bay in December. Sanctuary!

Oh no you don't!!!!!
I have just emailed the bunch of you the most stunning route "Roaring Kalahari Route". Lots of off road (good gravel and sand) mixed with plenty of tar. The route looks amazing and it's one of the most beautiful places in the country. Have a change for a change. Take the tents and camp on the red sand dunes under the stars. http://www.roaringkalahari.co.za/introduction.htm check out the interactive map!! :y115:

Ha Ha - I did check it out. Looks fantastic. I still have to go MB - will probably trailer down there coz I have to take everything down for the kid and the bigger kid but we can leave from MB and meet on the road. That entire website is very good. Beach - Kalahari - Beach - sounds good to me!

but we can leave from MB and meet on the road. [/quote]

Errrrrrr.... Mossel Bay is a tad far from the Kalahari - as the road goes (not the crow) your looking at about 1500kms. :y114:

Dave, the beach area real estate prices here in Florida and all of the US coast line are the same. I would have to win a big lottery to be able to afford ocean front property.
