My daughter, her husband and I flew to NYC on 22 December to spend the week and have Christmas there. I had never been to NYC so this was a first for me.
We took winter boots and middle-weight clothing expecting a bit of cool weather, but instead there were record-setting high temps. One day it was 22C (71F) with rain and fairly high humidity. Most of the other days were cloudy and in the 11-12C (low 50's) range. It also rained or showered on several days. but we couldn't let that stop us from seeing the sights.
The crowds in the streets and shops were massive and everywhere we went it was a festive atmosphere of lights and decorations in the streets and in the stores and shops. In the more popular areas where people gather (Times Square for example) there was a heavy police presence and armed soldiers keeping an eye open for anything suspicious. It was comforting to know they were looking out for us.

We rode the Staten Island ferry and got a good look at Lady Liberty. It was very cloudy and raining so some pictures aren't that great.

From there we roamed Times Square.

Skaters at Rockefeller Center.

We went to Ground Zero and wanted to go into the museum, but the lines were much too long so the best shot I could get was through a window of a broken girder. Standing there gave me chills knowing what had happened on that very spot.

This is the new building erected on the Twin-Towers site.

Giant Christmas trees covered in lights were everywhere. This one was the biggest evergreen tree I had ever seen - and we have plenty of big ones here!

And that pretty much covers day one of walking the streets and hopping on and off the subway system - which is a masterful piece of engineering - and the best way to get from A to B.

Brilliant, glad that you all had a very nice time, shame about the weather, but we all know we can't do a thing about it, so best get on with it as you all did. Loved the lights and the balls. Did you show the Americans how the Canadians skate then Rocky ?.
Was ground zero quiet, I must admit I don't think that I'd want to talk too much there, it would somehow seem disrespectful.

BGRIN yes, some of those skaters could have used some lessons from a Canadian who knows how to skate, but overall, they were doing pretty well.
No, it wasn't at all quiet at Ground Zero. It was noisy and business as usual. We were quite disappointed that we didn't get to see the museum, but it was late in the day; the lines were very long and our feet were tired. We would have had to stand for an hour in line and that was too hard on the legs.

We went into the famous Macy's store to see the decorations and the Charlie Brown displays in the windows.

One floor was dedicated to Christmas only.

Then it was over to Bryant Park where a temporary Christmas village of shops was set up.

From there we went over to Grand Central Station which is a magnificent building. The interior was nothing like I imagined even though I have seen it many times in movies.

We then took in the Museum of Natural History which is a fantastic place.

This is part of the South American and Inca display. I smiled when I saw the two center pictures because I've walked on Machu Picchu and on that street in Cusco.

This is a wet and dreary Central Park from the museum.
Oops, the picture of CP ended up small (?)

Christmas day we went over to the Empire State building and up to the observation deck for a view of the city. Amazingly, it wasn't windy up there and it didn't rain.
It was very mild as you can see by how people are dressed.

In the afternoon we went to Radio City Music Hall to take in a performance of the Rockettes. What a magnificent show they put on!

The interior of the hall and stage is something to behold.

It was hard to take pictures during the performances, but these are a couple of fair ones.

Wow I love all the Christmas stuff they have up that must really have made it worth the trip alone. Thinking about it I was in one of our main shopping malls just before Christmas and it had nothing that made you think it was Christmas and looked just like it normally looks all year round, what a huge disappointment that was.

A walk through Central Park. Dreary and overcast, but at least it wasn't raining.

Sunday afternoon we went to see the new Star Wars movie in 3D and flew home late that night.
All week we had been following the terrible storms in the south west and central USA knowing that some of that would eventually end up in the north east and over our province.
Weather warnings had been issued at home and we feared we might be stuck in NYC, but after a short delay we arrived home around 1:00 AM Monday morning.

Was Christmas in NYC better than at Home? No, just different and quite exciting - especially for me who had never been there before.

Yes, the Americans certainly know how to decorate and celebrate TUP
And as you can see the streets were filled with hordes of people.
Too bad your stores didn't show a bit of Christmas spirit and festivity.
Every large store and mall shopping areas were decorated.
We knew it was going to be like that which is why we wanted to go at Christmas time.
We also went to an indoor place called Chelsea Market and it was aglow with lights and reflective streamers.

great pics. you did more in a week than most New Yorkers do in a life time. I always did enjoy going down to the city to see the lights and attractions. Been to all those spots but since moving to Westchester County (where I now work and live ) I have drifted away from that yearly tradition. It's been a few years so thanks for reminding us on just how special NYC is during the holidays. Hope you enjoyed your stay!

Thanks guys TUP
We had a wonderful time and I enjoyed posting some pics and relive it all over again BGRIN
It's only about 90 minutes flying time between Halifax and NYC so it doesn't take very long going either way, but when we landed back home the storm earlier that day had passed and it was -10C (14F) with about 13cm (5") of snow on the ground.
I stayed overnight with my daughter and came home the next morning and shoveled BGRIN
