DEVICE CLOSES HIGHWAY DOWN FOR HOURS
Early Wednesday morning Hearn Police received a call from the manager of the Holiday Inn and Suites on Highway 6 in Hearne. He told police the maids were cleaning a room and found a device which he believed was a pipe bomb. He told dispatchers the maid had brought it to the office. The manager was told to put it down outside and back away.
Police closed down businesses close by, Highway 6 at FM 485 was closed for several hours. Freight trains were put on hold as the College Station Bomb Squad responded. The device was described as a piece of PVC pipe 12-14 inches long. It had caps on each side and a rod protruding from one end.
The bomb squad finally determined it was not a pipe bomb but and improvised personal device with wooden dowels inside. It appeared the metal shaft could have been connected to a drill.
They shutdown the major highway between Bryan/College Station and Waco, evacuated area businesses AND halted train traffic thru the area for an IPD.
