On Monday around noon, a man was riding his motorcycle near Utah State University. While driving down the road, he noticed a car pull out in front of him. Unable to stop in time, he had to intentionally lay his bike down to try and avoid a collision. He still collided with the car and that’s when the two burst into flames. He got trapped. Then this happened:

“It was very hot. It was hot and very dangerous,†bystander and rescuer Anvar Abdumitalimovic Suyundikov told KSL-TV. “I thought it was close to explode.â€

Suyundikov explained that the group of people had to take matters into their own hands because there was no time to wait for rescuers.

“If we wait, we could lose him,†Suyundikov said.

“It was a very tall fire,†he added. “When I lifted the car, it was very, very hot in there.â€
“(The motorcyclist) saw what was taking place in front of him, laid the motorcycle down in an effort to keep from colliding with the vehicle,†Assistant Logan Police Chief Jeff Curtis told KSL-TV. “I’m impressed that that many people would get involved, especially where there’s fire involved, the possibility of explosions and everything else,†he later added.

The victim, 21-year-old Brandon Wright, was transported to a local hospital and is in critical condition. He was not wearing a helmet.

Very lucky indeed.

I do wonder if he tried to brake or just threw the bike down into the slide? I've read a lot of accident reports where the rider lived that stated they never used the front brake, just locked up the rear and dropped the bike into a slide right into the other vehicle. Other reports I've read where the rider didn't survive, witnesses (riders riding with the victim) stated they could have stopped if the victim had used the front brake or could have hit at a much slower speed and possibly walked or limped away.

Riders have to get away from the thought that using the front brakes will throw them over the handlebars.

Sorry about that thread hijack, it's just after accidents where a rider lays the bike over that this goes thru my mind.

I had to lay my one bike down under an 18 wheeler the one time. We both slid right under and out the other side. Got up picked the bike up and road away just a bit of road rash. I was very lucky and I had that split second to make that choice. It was not the 18 wheelers fault but another car that jumped out in front of me. My choices were tbone the car or try and go under the 18 wheeler and I made the right one at the time.

My LAST inclination is to lay the bike down on purpose in a panic situation. I'll do everything in my power to get the bike stopped or slowed drastically before resorting to that.

Ditto. I have only laid a bike down purposely once and I was trying to stop prior to making that decision.
