Depends on what state you live in and whether it's a felony or misdemeanor.

In some states, you serve more time for a misdemeanor than in other states where murderers are released same day.

As long as your illegal thing doesn't involve murder, you should probably not worry too much and just get it over with. then, go on T.V. and say you are running for office and renounce what you did. Everything will be okay.
