Captured: America in Color from 1939-1943
Posted Jul 26, 2010

These images, by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, are some of the only color photographs taken of the effects of the Depression on America’s rural and small town populations. The photographs are the property of the Library of Congress and were included in a 2006 exhibit Bound for Glory: America in Color.

That was very cool...thanks for posting it. From the bottom of that same page was a link to another series of photos of cities in the USA.

I was interested in the old photos of Pittsburgh:

Houses crowded on one of the hills in Pittsburgh

A limousine factory in Pittsburgh

pitt_steel.jpg

Making steel in Pittsburgh

Those are incredible to say the least....and then again at the bottom of THAT page are more very interesting photo series.

The most iconic photo in the Pacific Theater series:

And one of the saddest:

This one is really worth checking out too!

See more photos from World War II: The Story behind the most famous war photograph in History, The raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima and the AP photographer Joe Rosenthal.

My Dad knew Pfc. Rene Gagnon, one of the surviving flag raisers

Later on that page are other photos taken by Rosenthal. Photos 25-33 are photos of the 1st Marines invasion of Peleliu, one of the invasions my Dad took part in.

Peleliu? Man your dad saw some rough action. I've read a couple books about Peleliu and it's really been more like horror stories than war documentaries.

While watching "The Pacific" I was noticing after the Peleliu chapter began that a lot of the action seemed familiar. I didn't notice until later that the mini series or at least part of it was based on one of my favorite books, "With The Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for veterans but the ones that saw action on Peleliu and Okinawa stand at the head of the class.

Those are the two landings he took part in......Peleliu and Okinawa. The 4th Marines were reconstituted into the 1st Marines because the 1st were decimated at Guadalcanal. My Dad met Gagnon at Tsingtao Naval Air Base in China when Gagnon was with the 6th Marines.

I don't know what happened to my earlier post on this topic, but I wanted Tony to know that I've literally spent hours drinking in these fabulous photos and I want to spend more time with them.

It's amazing that the original Kodachrome had such a distinctive color signature that many of these photos can be identified as Kodachrome prints immediately, at first viewing. It was so far ahead of it's time in terms of color rendition......

Tony, that you so much for this stunning post.

Kerry, like you I have spent a lot of time viewing the photos. I'm glad AJ pointed out the links at the bottom, I've spent a bunch of time in those links, especially the photos from the Pacific and the Rosenthal link. I love history and those photos have more history in them than a lot of history class books.

I don't know how many of you "caught" it, but the History Channel began a 2 part special last night at 9:00 PM EST called Vietnam in HD. Part 2 is tonight. Last night's show was well worth watching and I'll be watching Part 2 tonight.
