The new Amelia Earhart movie is just now in release and was filmed in various places including South Africa and here in Halifax and in other locations in Nova Scotia.
My daughter is a movie wardrobe specialist and worked on the movie with Richard Gere.
Hilary Swank is the star and also stars Ewan McGregor of "Long Way Round & Down" fame.
Amelia disappeared on her around the world flight just before I was born back in the last century :ya2:

Hilary Swank was on the Jay Leno show the other night and told the story of the flight of the plane down from Europe to South Africa.
The plane was low on fuel and radioed down to a country (forget if she mentioned the country) they were passing over and asked permission to land for fuel. Permission was denied so they flew on.
Moments later they were given permission and turned around. Upon landing the plane and crew were taken into custody and held for an arbitrary ransom of $12,000.00 US!
The film company (or whomever) paid the ransom and the plane was allowed to leave.
The captors bade then farewell with a "thank you very much, have a nice flight, have a nice day", etc.
No hard feelings, just part of doing business I guess :ya2:

When I was doing business in the Bahamas in the 70's, that was the way of life. When we were importing Caterpillar repairs parts, we would enclose an envelope with cash with the customs paper work. Voila, we got our parts with minimal duty instead of 100% duty.

There's a legend of a wrecked plane up in the Ozarks with the name "Winnie Mae" on it. Folks claim one woman and one man was found dead onboard, and in accordance with a footnote to the Arkansas "road kill" laws (makes things that fall from the sky equal to things run over), the finders got to eat them. Of course they were well cooked; after all we are civiized here in Arkansas.
