I am thinking about installing new slides in my Amal MK II's. I see three different sets: STD zinc slide, anodized slide (harder wearing than STD zinc slide) and chromed. Which of the three is the best performing?
 
Yes, chrome for sure. That's what came with the new Amal's I bought.
If you're having carb issues that require new slides you probably also have bore wear in the carb body. New slides may help, but they won't compensate for wear.
 
Rocky. My Amals are performing fine. I just thought that this would be a good addition to the carbs. A sort of preventive maintenance. I still have a set of JRC carbs that I may put on next winter.

Amals get a bad rap, but if they're relatively new and tight, tuned correctly, they work very well.
I have two new Amals on my old bikes and they run and start fine.
JRC are good carbs from all I hear about them and seem to be an improvement over the Amals.
 
ALL of my classic triumphs have their original pair of Amal monoblocs or concentrics, and ALL of them run decently. Some are re-sleeved, which extends the life by longer than I'll ever need (but that's mainly because I have many bikes to choose from on any given day I want to ride).

It's a personal preference, and I don't begrudge anyone wanting Mikuni and/or single carb conversions, they work well too.
 
Where a lot of owners get into trouble with Amal carbs is by screwing on the mounting nuts as tight as possible. This can easily warp the flange and create an air leak.
The carbs have an O-ring to seal the surfaces so all you need to do is make sure it's in place correctly and snug up the mounting nuts until they are just tight.
I use lock nuts so they won't vibrate loose. I you use regular nuts, check them from time to time.
 
I took off the dual amal's & put a single 26mm mukini (I started with 2 26mm mic's but found a single was adequate) on my 650 bonnie and was amazed at the performance.
 
Mine still ran a little rich after tweaking and amal's gentle power curve was replaced with a wheelie bike. Really I had 3 650's two triumph's 1 500 BSA with a 650 top end bolted on and results were the same. they say the mikuni adds no hp to the bike but, the motor winds out so much quicker it feels like a different machine.
