Pittsburgh's Civic Arena, built in 1961, is sadly being torn down piece by piece.

The dome's stainless steel outer roof has been completely removed and will be reused.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is selling Christmas ornaments made by Wendel August Forge out of pieces of it's stainless steel (proceeds will go to charity).

I took this photo the other day showing it sans the stainless covering:

It used to look like this:

The Civic Arena was the world's first retractable dome building and was the home of the Pittsburgh Philharmonic Orchestra, many basketball events, rock concerts, conventions, hockey all-star games, professional hockey, motocross, monster trucks, circus, and ice capades.

At one point they thought about blowing it up as part of the new Batman movie, but that couldn't be coordinated.

...and yes, it did actually open-up:

Thats too bad. I hate seeing old structures that have been around and become part of your existence go away. Thats kind of the difference between america and europe....they let thier historic buildings stand as long as they are able and therefore have many ancient cities that are prized and known around the world. We have strip malls.....
