The small town of Sussex is in our sister province of New Brunswick is only a couple of hours from the Canada/US border. It's another couple of hours to the first major city in the state of Maine, Bangor.
The senior literary class in the Sussesx high school has been on a letter writing and video campaign for about a year asking author, Stephen King, to visit their class since he lives near Bangor and is fairly close by.
About six months ago Mr. King replied saying he would think about it - a more or less standard reply from a celeb.
Last Thursday the class teacher received a call on her cell phone and the male voice said, "Hello, this is Stephen King. My wife and I are taking a drive in the country and will stop in to see you on Friday."
The poor English teacher nearly fainted. She didn't tell anyone, not even the school principal.
Mr. King arrived while classes were in session and was quietly ushered into the principal's office. He was out at the time and when he returned he was more than stunned to see Stephen King waiting in his office reading a magazine.
After the literary class had assembled, in walks Stephen King dressed in worn jeans and a casual shirt as ordinary as anyone. The class nearly lost their minds!!
Mr. King stayed for over an hour with the class and it was an hour those kids will always remember.
He told them he was so impressed with their invitations and the letters and writings they sent him that he simply could not refuse to come.
I love stories like this where a celeb has a good and positive influence on young people and gives something back to the younger generation.

Awesome!

To this day I will never forget a visit to my grade school by a man that was a retired State Policeman. He'd retired years before but had attained the rank of Commandant of the entire Pennsylvania State Police.

His claim to fame was that he'd been involved in a shoot out with John Dillinger in which he was wounded in the arm. He had to have his arm amputated as a result, but never stopped being a cop. You could tell he was one of those old skool coppers as he reminded you of Elliot Ness (or at least the actor that played Elliot Ness).

All too often celebrities, isolate themselves from their public or every outing becomes a photo op. It's great to hear that Mr. King still "moves among the commoners" so to speak. TUP

Great story! Big points to Stephen King! I just wonder why school kids chose King - his books are seriously scary and creepy. I've never been able to look at a clown in the same way after reading King's novel :y2: BUT, glad to know that there's a new generation out there into the alternative reading matter - bogey men under the bed stuff!

I don't know why the kids wanted Stephen King in particular to come to their school, but it may have something to do with Mr. King being a casual and regular type of guy who is famous author and doesn't live too far away from their town.
Mr. King drove up to Sussex at his own expense and gave a free lesson on writing for over an hour. Not many famous authors or any celeb would do that.
