Similar situation many years ago in the suburbs. I’m on a main thoroughfare , probably a 40 km ph zone , slow done and stop to allow the little old lady to cross the painted on the pavement cross walk . When she’s in front of my car some person passes me on the inside bicycle path and misses her by a foot or two . I don’t think she even noticed but if she had picked up the pace a bit she’d have been a goner . Haven’t been a fan of crosswalks since incident.

Exactly. What gets me is the people who do these moves obviously are not thinking about their actions.

One thing I always ask myself before overtaking....."Do I really need to over take".....its a hazardous exercise.

As is riding in packs.....encourages this very sort of thing.

My comment is boring I know....but there you go.

Three things come to mind.
The first is multi car/truck passing; something I try to avoid at all costs even if I am behind a line of vehicles being held up by a hay wagon or combine harvester making its way along the road. Some knucklehead in the line will become inpatient and pull out to pass after a cursory check or, even worse, after depending on the technology in his/her vehicle to satisfy him/herself that nothing is approaching. It appears that the practice of looking in the mirrors or turning the head is a thing of the past. (don't you love motorist now who reverse their vehicles while staring at the screen in the dashboard instead of turning their heads).
When I am out riding, i generally do not have time constraints and if I have to slow down a little, or a lot, for a period of time, well then that is the way it is. Eventually the slow moving obstruction will turn off or the impatient motorists will pass the slowpoke until i can overtake the obstruction.
The second involves group riding and the group passing slow-moving vehicles. I find that this tends to pis, er, annoy car/truck drivers and an annoyed/angry motorist is almost as dangerous as an inattentive motorist. I don't often ride with a group as I like to ride at my own pace. I will often ride with one other rider but we tend to think alike and so pacing and overtaking not an issue.

Point three involves power on hand. well, nothing to say on this really and so time to put away the soap box until next time

Glad you escaped uninjured.

I ride with the belief that every car/truck driver's primary goal that day is to run me off the road. A jaded view of the world? - yes but a necessary one in my opinion
Ride safe

I like having enough power on hand so that when passing cars I can roll it on in high gear , gain the speed needed to pass with ease , and roll it back again when I get to the back of the vehicle so as not to wake up the baby or Grandma , which ever is napping . Just passing quietly can startle a driver if they are not aware of the goings on . The tiger is very quiet on the exhaust side but the intake really honks .
