Thought I'd better post an update of how the bike is running with the new PVL coils and heat shield.

Bloomin' lovely is the answer :y2: Have been riding around in traffic today in the intense heat (well for the UK anyway!) and not a single hiccup from the motor.

Bit concerned how quickly the rad fan comes on though but the needle never went past half way so can't complain. I've heard these 1st gen Trophy's can run on the hot side? Was considering fitting a rad from a later model as they are a bit wider but need to do some research first to make sure it's needed.

It all depends (the fan) on how slow you are riding and of course the ambient temperature. If you are going stop light to stop light, it doesn't give it much air flow between stops to cool.

If you temp gauge stays in the normal range it all sounds good to me.

PS: I think people say they run hot b/c they feel the heat channelling up and out near their knees and inside of the legs since it has no place else to go. My 750 Ninja actually seems hotter than my 1200 Trophy.

My last few bikes have been of the Japanese sports variety and I can't remember the fans coming on more than a couple of times so it's a bit of a surprise when the Trophy's cuts in, especially after only a few miles of riding.

The temp gauge stays in the lower half so I guess it's OK? I know some people have fitted lower temperature sensors to their rads to help with cooling so maybe someone has modded mine in the past.

I've read that the early UK bikes from '91 - '92 used the same rad on the 750, 900 and 1200 so maybe it was feeling the strain on the 1200. Two years later, on the Trophy 4, a bigger rad was fitted so I presume the cooling was borderline (sorry, no pun intended) on those early 1200 models.

If a cheap later model rad comes up on ebay I may just try it to see if it makes a difference.

I agree you certainly can feel a lot of heat around the inner leg area but usually that's a good thing here in the UK for most of the year - it's just unseasonably hot at the moment!

Glad to see you're back on the road. Wouldn't worry about the rad fan coming on not until the temp gauge gets into the top 1/4 (providing levels are OK and not losing coolant anywhere), mine stays around 1/3 to 1/2 way and fan comes on when in traffic or when idling too long. Better than not coming on at all.

Didn't realise until I had this bike that they are musical (whistling petrol tanks). :y2: Not overly loud - only noticeable in the garage really.

Thanks - it's nice to be able to enjoy the bike running properly :y16:

I've spoken to a few early Trophy owners now and they all say the fan is more active than most other bikes so I guess it's nothing to worry about. Still might try a later rad though.

As for the whistling tank, it's as loud as ever and driving me mad ANGER I've stripped and cleaned the petrol cap but it's just the same. Surely if the air is not escaping freely from the tank then it must restrict the fuel flow? There's quite a rush of air when I open the cap so something is amiss. Might have to try another cap if one comes up on ebay.
