I'm seeing photos online both ways. http://classic-motorbikes.net/gallery~triumph-bonneville-t140-gallery Mostly with the springs closer to the top. I'd like to be sure they are mounted correctly, which ever way they go...

in reading the owner's manual, it's says models TO frame number BX05107 were fitted with oil hydraulic rear suspension damper units and models AFTER BX05107 were fitted with gas units. For the oil units, the adjuster ring must be at the BOTTOM and for the gas the adjuster ring must be at the TOP. The question is how do I identify if my shocks are gas or oil???

The frame number seems to be XX03086...the appears to be AFTER BX05107 ???? Thoughts???

I just had a closer look at your first photo and the one posted by AJ and then the one in the link that I posted a couple of posts back, I can't be 100% but I think yours are oil and mounted correctly. Lets see what AJ has to say when he comes on line. Did that photo help with your air intake?

Any triumph dealer with a simple phone call and whatever markings are on the shocks, should be able to tell you.

Are you sure about that SAD
A 1978 bike will be older than the staff at most Triumph dealers.
I had to show a professional bike mechanic how to adjust Amal carbs on a T140 in his own shop last year because he was too young to know, he only understood EFI, I don't have a clue in that area.

+1 I concur. Unless you happen to find an older or enthusiastic vintage bike mechanic at a dealership, the mechanics will not know anything about Meriden Triumphs. Bloor deliberately separated the new Triumph from the old and Triumph today does not have anything to do with the Triumphs of old as far as parts, servicing and repairing go.

I never did find any serial number on the actual shocks and I looked everywhere on them.

Here's the definitive passage:

Girling gas filled suspension units are fitted to machines with frame numbers after BX05107.

On no account must this type of suspension unit be mixed with the earlier oil hydraulic type.

To identify the type of unit: the gas filled units are equipped with an 11mm (0.44 in) diameter damper rod whereas oil units have a 9.5mm (0.38 in) diameter rod.

It is essential that each type of unit is fitted the correct way up. The gas filled unit must be fitted with the castellated adjustment ring at the top of the unit, whilst the oil hydraulic unit must be fitted with the adjustment ring at the bottom.

I didn't know if a previous owner may have replaced the shocks, so I couldn't really go by the frame number. I measured the diameter of the damper rod to ascertain which type I had and mine turned out to be gas.

Thanks Zilch!

The question I have regards the Air Intake Tubes (#4) of the diagram. What is the proper positioning when installed within the air intake? Pointing down and back? Down and forward? Up and back? Up and Forward? Top square hole in the body or Bottom square hole in the body? I'd LOVE a picture of someones!!!
