Today’s Ride To Eat began a few weeks ago when I posted on Two Wheeled Texans that I had grabbed a photo of Texas FM 1696 (Farm to Market 1696) road sign.

One of the other members on the forum had planned to ride over from Beaumont, Texas to get a photo of the sign and then ride in to Bedias, Texas to have breakfast at Garcia's Cafe before riding over to Bryan/College Station, Texas to visit his daughter who is a student at Texas A&M. While we don’t claim a sign as ours to get, several of us let the others know which signs we have thereby saving someone from riding out to get a sign that has already been captured by someone else. No one had captured 1696 yet so I grabbed it after one of our Pie Runs. I asked Ken when he was planning to head to Bedias for breakfast and I would join him there and we would post up a photo with both of our bikes. Ken told his daughter what we planned to do and offered a different ride location, skip Bedias and eat lunch instead of breakfast. With that in Ken’s mind he suggested we do the ride on 4/10/2011 and it just so happened that he picked my weekend off. We didn't run by Bedias because the signs had already passed 1696 and no sense swinging by there to grab another one since there was better roads to ride than making that detour.

So the plans were set and each of us contacted our normal ride groups to let them know of our plans. We knew we could have just Ken and myself or a group of 10 riders. With the ride coming up and the fact I had a rear tire I wasn’t sure would make the trip, it was so thin I could see the air in the tire. A quick look on line and the report Adrian posted on the Shinko 705’s made up my mind and I ordered a set for Black Betty.

So the tires came in and as luck would have it so did the No-Mar Mount/Dismount Bar my wife ordered for my birthday. The only problem was my work schedule and my TASO Baseball schedule didn’t give me any time to change the tires but at the last minute I was able to get the rear mounted, the front will have to wait another week or two.

Looks like something is missing…

I finished up getting the tire back on the bike too late Saturday night to give it a try so the RTE will be my first run on it.

So up bright and early (0800) Sunday morning I finally head out to meet up with the locals at a gas station up the road in New Waverly, Texas. I was only expecting to find 4 other riders after 3 others had to cancel their plans Saturday night. But when I arrived I found that Debbie had decided to met us at the station and so had Jack.

Here is the ride planner, Ken and his daughter front and center, well maybe that should be front and left?

Dave and Debbie. Debbie’s boyfriend needs to watch out, letting her ride with such good looking fellers when he’s not around...

Gary wouldn’t let his picture be taken with me until we were properly introduced. I’m not a little feller but I sure felt small sitting next to Gary…

The Beaumont bunch had never been to Yankee’s Tavern, a local bikers hang out in Carlos, Texas so we head over there to swap a few more lies and let them see the sites…

What is that I see? Is it really a PINK Harley V-Rod?

Debbie’s bike, Jack’s KLR and Dave over by his play bike

We all head out different directions from Yankee’s, Phil and Ed had left Bryan a few minutes before us and didn’t stop at Yankee’s. The Beaumont bunch hits the highway, Jack, Debbie and Dave all head off down the FM in front of Yankee’s and James (he rode the red GS) and I head for the forest to test the Shinko on some dirt roads and attempt to get out of the wind. Man was the wind blowing today!

So I pull back into the driveway with an additional 164 miles on the clock and a ton of dust from a run thru the forest on the way home.

We had a great time enjoying old friends, new friends, good food, sunny skies, WINDY but good roads and a high of 87F as we were leaving Bryan.
