2015 Speedmaster - Any Fueling Adjustment?

So, this Speedmaster is not mine. My partner bought it, never rides it, so I do.

I actually thought this thing was carbureted... The throttle bodies shoved into fake carburetor trick is GENIUS.

Unfortunately, this puts me out of my comfort zone. I've only ever had carb bikes, so this being EFI is new to me.

When he bought the bike, it already had aftermarket exhaust on it. I'm not sure what brand of anything cause the bike is in the garage and I'm not, but they don't SEEM to be straight pipes.

In any event, the thing is clearly struggling a LITTLE bit with fueling now. Throttle spiking off idle sometimes results in a throttle dip or a big hesitation before RPM increase, cruising at a constant low throttle causes quite a bit of hesitation/sporadic throttling, and there is pretty significant decel popping. Also, every now and again while rev matching a downshift, the throttle spike will literally do NOTHING. It won't drop, or spike, just kinda nothing.

Now, on a carb bike I'd just yank the carbs off, increase main jet a little, and probably go another half turn/full turn on AFR screw.

So, I guess after all my rambling, my question is: Is there ANY way to try and smooth it out other than dropping $200+ on an ECU tune? I read a bit about the "12 minute tune up", but that seems to be more focused on older EFI Triumphs, and also ECU adaptation usually isn't enough to overcome something as severe as exhaust or intake.

Sorry for the big rant for a first post! Looking forward to browsing this forum and learning some stuff for this very new to me set up.

On a side note, this might be one of the best all around bikes I've ever ridden. I ALMOST prefer it to my old '97 VFR750, and that's really saying something.

I had the exact same problem with my America. Removed the air injection and the O2 sensor and the problem was fixed. Plenty of videos and info on this. I am presuming the Speedmaster has these fitted as well. No extra tuning was needed, I do have standard pipes however.

Thanks! I kind of assumed 'tune' was the only real option, but can't hurt to ask!
I'm going to remove the AIR system too, I think, though mostly to make general maintenance easier haha.

You will need these to remove O2 sensors or you will have an engine warning light on all the time.

These kits are no doubt available in the US and probably cheaper, but these are the two kits that you need. Both are easy jobs. You will need to remove the fuel tank to do the air injection. Much easier if the tank is nearly empty.

My SM has shut off a couple of times if I apply the throttle at a stop. I increased the idle speed by a hundred rpms and it seems to have cured it. When it quits- it will start up immediately but it p me off. My ECU was remapped by the previous owner.

Thank you much!
In the interest of full disclosure there is mixed opinions on if this is the correct thing to do. Some believe it runs the risk of your engine running lean at low revs (referring to O2 sensor removal here not the air injection)
I have had no issues and have done at least 1500km since removing them. I am not a mechanic so research this or get other opinions and make your own decision. I checked my spark plugs a couple of times after doing this and there was no issue. Worth it for me.

For now I'm just going to do the AIR removal. I raised idle a bit which mostly solved it, plus I am probably just adjusting to the bikes quirk.

I probably won't do the 02 sensors unless I decide to get a tune and some extra mods.

Thanks for the follow up though!

Just for anyone’s info here’s a pic of my spark plug (as of 20min ago) The insulator is not discolored. Blackening points to too rich, brown with deposits points to lean. Looks about right to me.

I went the Triumph Twin Power re-map (DIY) and AIR/O2 sensor removal route with Roy (2011 America). Cost me around AUD340 and an hour or so of my time. Significant HP/torque/tractability improvement. BTW - Roy has aftermarket Voodoo "Dunstall Replica" mufflers.
