Hello all,
I have an issue that I can't figure out. After an hour of city gridlock traffic - a lot of clutch action, gear changing, and pulling up - the engine gets hot of course, but the ability to select neutral completely goes. Even when rolling it becomes difficult to unable. As an additional bit of info, the idle speed - of course the clutch has to be held in at traffic stops - is slightly raised above normal.
Once the engine is cold everything is cool again.
To deal with the problem I put new clutch plates in - everything else looked ok - and 20/50 oil.
Ta ta!

Heat expansion is using up your adjustment free play. Re-adjust right to the edge of actuation (where it will just start to slip on hard throttle) and try it again. Play with it from there.
Thanks for your help grandpaul.
Just to ensure I understand correctly, when you suggest adjusting free play, where do you mean - the pushrod adjuster, pressure plate or at the cable/handlebar?
And just as an extra ask, what exactly is expanding?
Thanks for your time and inclination…

Everything expands as the engine heats up. Usually it is in the three clutch pack adjuster screws, and also the pushrod.

I blame global warming. I commuted every day from Primrose Hill to Clerkenwell on a XJR 1300. Cannot imagine doing it on a classic Triumph. I now live in Queensland so long periods of stationary on my 67 Bonneville are much to be avoided in temps of 35-40 deg c. Has anyone out there any experience of what actually happens to a 650 Triumph engine if it ticks over for long periods? Does it in fact reach a happy balance of radiating heat and creating heat without seizing solid? Prefer not to test this theory.
But we do now know neutral stops working!
