Scrambler Tail Tidy

Hi all,

I hated the tail end of the Scrambler 1200 when I bought it, so designed my own tail tidy as I couldn't justify spending £200 on one.

Made 2 types, with and without indicator fixing.

Just did the Yankee version (smaller plate). Remove small black screws holding side red reflectors. Remove and save for next owner. Using thick dental floss or thin fishing line, "saw" top reflector off tail section. Test fit license plate (in my case chrome) decorative holder under license plate illumination fixture. It may not appear quite flush but will eventually. Using 1/8" flat aluminum bar stock cut two pieces that fit vertically inside holder. Mark and drill the aluminum stock to fit holder. Temporary (4) bolts fasten to bar stock. Hold unit to tail section up about 1" higher than stock. It will almost click into correct height. From inside fender assistant will mark both bars while you hold plate holder in desired position. Using long 3/16" pop rivets attach bars to plastic light assembly. Only now will you insert actual plate in position inside decorative chrome holder. Using small red reflectors (4). with wing nuts you should be legal in most locations. Now find small turn signals and you save about $100.

Just found the pix of minor tail tidy hack list above. Tools & supplies needed, Drill, scrap aluminum strips (2), pop rivet gun. Photos are before, during, final. My aluminum was a bit longer as I use the Triumph decorative frame.

I just tried this $42 kit from ebay (from seller racing-knightmotor) and installed it last night. Went very well, except my stock turn signals are too wide and now one sits in front of the exhaust, so I've ordered small bullet lights and going to change them out when they are here. I did have to cut the fender plastic almost to the screw hole itself though to get the kit to fit along with the rest of the fender.

The kit states it is only for Scrambler 1200 2019-2022, but mine is a 2023 and it fits fine.

Hey, Rocky, here's my recollection of things. I found another video online that goes through it, too, I think it was from British Customs.

- Remove the seat
- Remove plastic cover (2 allen head in front, and 1 in back)
- Disconnect rear wire quick-disconnect.
- Remove 4 Torx bolts under seat at rear holding back of fender. Be careful not to let metal inserts drop from the grommets.
- Remove 2 8mm bolts from under fender by tire. At this point, fender will drop and is no longer attached by quick-disconnect

- Remove rear tail light bolts. This will allow plastic piece to drop (there are 2 large grommets to pull out too)

- Cut the plastic tail piece off as close to the rear tail light bolt holes. Takes seconds to do with a hack saw. For the tidy kit I purchased from above, I had to get very close to the holes otherwise I wasn't able to line up the grommets and screw holes when putting back together. See picture below on how close I had to get. I don't think I could have left much more with this kit (I did about 3 or 4 cuts until it was enough).

- Pretty much reverse everything to put it back together. I took it all apart again last night to put on new turn signals because the stock ones were in front of the exhaust, and removing fender, splicing wires (I cut the connectors off the OEM lights and soldered onto new lights), and re-installing with new lights only took me about 35-40 minutes and I didn't need the mounting bracket with the new lights (shown in attachment).
