A group of us went for a ride on our old bikes today and pulled in at one of our favourite eating places about 100 miles from home.
We parked up next to a yellow Honda Goldwing trike with matching trailer and a Florida license plate. We admired the rig, but it's not our cup of tea.
The restaurant was crowded, but there was a middle-aged couple sitting at a double table with four empty chairs. They invited us to join them and take a seat. We were wearing club T-shirts so they knew we were bike riders - and probably saw us ride in anyway.
We began to chat with them and learned they owned the big yellow Honda parked outside. They live in Florida now but were from Indiana.
I asked how they enjoyed the ride up here and that's when my eyes bugged out:y13:
They had ridden across the US - Florida to California - up the coast to Oregon and Washington; across British Columbia and across the continent through parts of Canada and the US, finally arriving in Nova Scotia a couple of days ago:y13::y13::y13:
The couple are both retired and obviously have means to leave home for months on end and stay in motels and eat in restaurants every day.
I asked the fellow what his destination was for today and he said, "I don't know. It's wherever we are tonight." I loved that answerTUP
That's what they've been doing for the past several months - going wherever the road leads.
It was fantastic meeting them and enjoying a meal with them.
Go folks, goTUP

Yeah, I often lament the fact that I was born good looking instead of rich:y34::y43::y21:
They were a great couple with a great sense of humor. We had lots of laughs during the meal.
We finished eating at the same time and went outside to watch them leave. We said goodbye, wished them safe journey, etc., then the fellow put the trike in reverse, backed out and pulled away with a toot of the horn and a big wave from both of them. What a way to go!
They were having the times of their lives.

That's a good story and I also wish them the best and safe riding.
I'd personally prefer to do it on a normal two wheeled bike, ideally with a back up car to carry the luggage. If a back up car wasn't an option and I had to carry more than a solo could handle then I'd rethink the trip and just do it in a car. To me a trike and trailer just isn't motorcycling, it's motoring with all of the disadvantages.

I, also, prefer two wheels and I see plenty of two wheelers pulling trailers. I think if I were physically unable to make a trip on two wheels, I would use a sidecar rig and no trailer. I would prefer three wheels to cage.

How about that Carl, I forgot about sidecars and I actually had one back in the 70's. Yep second choice to traveling on a std solo is an outfit.
This was my daily transport in 1971.

That is way cool!! Very nice rig!! I'll bet you wish you still that rig as a classic. I really like a sidecar. It is not the same as two wheels; but it is unique and fun. And you can pack a lot of gear in and on one.

I'm with you guys. A trike isn't in my future. I don't care for them at all. I don't care much for sidecars either, but to each his own.
Life is about choices and what pleases you.
I think that when the day comes that I can't ride two wheels I would probably just give it up.
But as long as I can still ride a 44 year-old British BSA 441 single 320 km's (200 miles) a day at my age with no ill effects (like I did yesterday), then I'm good to go:y2:
I know, I know, brag, brag, brag:y2:

Rocky, I love my side car. I would prefer to ride two wheels; but I can no longer do that safely. I still want to ride and be in the wind; so the choice is a trike or a sidecar - and I don't care for trikes. However, I think I would like one of those Can Am Spyders; but they are out of our budget range. I can ride longer distances on my rig than I can two up. Riding my own rig allows me to move around more, stretch, and even stand while I am riding. With my bad back, I have to be able to change positions. But I wish I could be riding two wheels.
