This was at my son's high school.
Monday morning almost one hundred Willis High School students took part in the Montgomery County Shattered Lives program. The program is used to demonstrate the dangers of drinking and driving and texting and driving.
The call came in to Montgomery County 911 at 9:05am with a frantic young lady calling for help. She told dispatchers there had been a massive crash with fifteen to twenty victims. MCHD along with Precinct 1 Constables Office, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, North Montgomery County Fire Department and DPS all responded.
Arriving on the scene they discovered fifteen victims dead, three were transported to area hospitals. One was to be flown but weather had Air Medical grounded. DPS Troopers arrested two for DWI and transported them to the Montgomery County Jail.
One of the victims who stuck it out was shivering from the cold and wet but was glad he was able to take part in such an important program.
Parents of the victims looked on as did the students from the high school. Many tears were shed and many parents who walked up to their children said if it was hard today just think how hard it would be with them really being killed in a crash.
It was even more difficult for Kristy Gonzales, the mother of one of the victims Taylor Gonzales who had a birthday today.
Sandra Sherman also took it hard as both her daughters Kourtney and Frances were both victims. Bob Bagley, a board member with Montgomery County Hospital District who was on hand to watch the scene unfold was close enough to embrace Sandra Sherman as she was visibly shaken over seeing both her daughters.
Shattered Lives is a non profit group which is made up by many volunteers and works off donations. To put a program on runs close to $10,000 for each school which are met by dwindling donations.
The expenses include not just make up for the students, but hotel rooms as the victims spend the night away from family and friends which enhances the loss of not having them around. Meals for the volunteers and student participants.
The planning starts months in advance of the event and continues up to the event taking place.
Overnight the video, shot not just from the scene but as students are removed from class as victims, will be edited and produced for a general assembly which will take place tomorrow at the school. There the video will be shown as well as speakers that will address the student body.
