Farside's been bitten by a Violin Spider! This is such a nasty little beast. The bite is venomous and serious. The venom rots the flesh so the baby spiders have something to feed on when they hatch. URGGH! The little monster bit him, laid eggs in the bite and now........ it's so gross. He's got a hole about 300millimetres across and I don't know how deep. Doctor had to dig out the eggs and and and. When the doctor starts getting squeemish you know it's bad. So with the medication and daily dressings, we hope it heals. The Violin bites can take 10 months + to heal. In the very very worst untreated cases, guys have lost their fingers after one of these little creature bit them.
Then yesterday I spotted a Violin spider crawling across my monitor - squashed! My son also found one in his bed - squashed! If they weren't so damn venomous, we wouldn't do the squishing thing but in this case.................... history!
And they're so small! :y19:

The scientific name of that spider is Loxosceles parrami. The common name is a Recluse spider. They are "true spiders" and not Tarantulas.

They do have a dermonecrotic bite, although I've never heard of them laying eggs in the wound???

I don't like spiders, but can tolerate them. We don't have any that are venomous, and I can't think of anyone being bitten by a spider over here. My wife is petrified of them! I have known her sit and watch a spider for several hours until I get home to remove it. She watches it so that she knows where it is! If it goes out of sight I have to search for it, she is that scared of them!
I hope Farside recovers quickly. I hear that lots of beer is a good cure for spider bites! :y18:

I guess having you and your better half sleep overnight at my house would be a bit out of the question then......with my three Tarantulas sharing the house?

Thanhfully, we don't have any venomous spiders or snakes here.

Don't you have Copperhead amd Water Moccasin snakes in Nova Scotia?

My god ! Thats horrible. I never knew a spider could be so serious ! I was bitten on the foot by a black widow not too long ago. Not serious, and i didn't go to a doctor for it, but man was it painful !

We have the brown recluse here in Florida - complete with the violin. They, indeed, have a nasty bite that takes a long time to heal. As Gromit said, the flesh rots.

Ha ha Sili - yes, 30mm! Jeez, can you imagine 300mm??
He's just been to the doctor again to have the wound checked and the doc is really happy. Said he can't believe how well Farside heals. No more eggs found, wound healing well, Farside much happier.
Has had a few beers, a couple of vodkas and copious amounts of wine - maybe that's what did the trick.

Seeker, I still don't know how to get pics to post but if you Google 'violin spider bites' there are some nasty, graphic pics of these.

When we were in the bush a few weeks ago, we came across a massive spider NEST - it one of the few communal spiders found here and they build a nest and hundreds of the little creatures live in it. This got me interested so I contacted the Spider Society in SA for more info. They've recommended some books which I've ordered - although I'm not crazy about spiders, they've got me interested. So next time I go to the bush and see these massive webs and the very different nest, I'll be able to check out which spider built them.

Just glad Farsides on the mend! :y72:

I had a good friend and Army buddy who was bitten by one. It was up under a hot rod rod he was building and he got bit while working on the rod. He did not know he was bit until the next day. He darn near lost his finger.

Gromit is that what a violin spider looks like ? was it not a Black widow?
I often help spiders that look like those in the pics out of my pool .I feel sorry for them .Am I going to do it again ? NOT

Harty, the violin spiders (recluse spiders as they are called in this hemisphere) are closely related to the black widows but are much more deadly and debilitating. As you probably do, we have both kinds here. Black widow bites are also very painful; but not as bad as the violin/recluse bites.
