Riverdale is a television series based on the characters from Archie Comics: Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and more. Running on The CW/Netflix, the teen drama series reprises the classic town of Riverdale and its inhabitants in bold and subversive ways. Says Rotten Tomatoes:

Riverdale offers an amusingly self-aware reimagining of its classic source material that proves eerie, odd, daring, and above all addictive.”

For rev-heads, one of the most interesting characters is Archie’s best friend, Forsythe “Jughead” Jones III (Cole Sprouse), an outcast with a philosophical bent. Jughead’s father, F.P. (Skeet Ulrich), is the leader of the Southside Serpents, a criminal gang and motorcycle club that operates on the fringes of Riverdale.

Season one ended up with Jughead slipping on a black leather jacket, marking his journey to become an official Southside Serpent.

In the first episode of season two, Jughead whips the tarp off a motorcycle in front of his dad’s old trailer where he lives. At first, the make and model of the bike was unclear.

Upon further research, we have been able to determine that Jughead’s rides a brat-styled Honda CB550. There has been some who suggest the bike is a Honda CB750, but closer investigation of the valve covers and other small details indicate that the bike is a CB550.

Honda CB550

The Honda CB550, built from 1974 -1978, was the middleweight contender in Honda’s venerable CB series. The bike offered an air-cooled, SOHC inline four with 38 horsepower and a top speed of 92 mph. Evolved from the earlier CB500, the first version, the CB550K, had wire wheels and a 4-into-4 exhaust. The later CB550F Super Sport, which sold alongside the K version, offered a lighter 4-into-1 exhaust, flatter handlebars, and a chrome-less fuel tank.

The motorcycle in Riverdale certainly does not look like a factory stock CB550. Instead, the bike has been customized in a cafe / brat style, with different paint, clip-on handlebars, brat seat, exhaust, side covers, and tank. The flat seat is known in customizing circles as a “brat seat,” and you can read more on the history of brat style motorcycles.

We will update this post with more on the motorcycles of the South Side Serpents and other show characters as they turn up in the series.
