I think that is how you spell it. I was watching a Food Network program yesterday and they had a dish that is supposed to be true Southern dish and it had this Grits in it. I could not make out what it actually was. It seems like they cooked it the same way you would do rice. :y7:

It's the germ from corn. Actually Grits are finely ground corn, 3/4 of all Grits sold are sold in the Southern USA. Grits are what life is all about, ifin' you ain't got Grits, you ain't a livin'.

Give me a bowl of grits, some sausage and a couple or three eggs over easy and I'm set for the day. A meal like that is so good it'll make a rabbit hug a hound.

Hello all,
I am from Alabama and breakfast without grits is unheard of! It is a breakfast staple and some times served at supper. You can make it plain with just salt and pepper, drop a block of cheddar cheese in the pot as we always did, or bits of sausage or bacon, or like in Louisiana make a gumbo out of it, with shrimp, smoked sausage, all the other seasonings for gumbo mixed with it, cheese, etc.. Damn!! I am gittin huuuungray!!!

Oh, if you are about half poor like we were growing up, my mom used to save the left over grits in the pot and put it in the ice box (frig) where it sort of gets hard or congealed. You get it out for supper and shave off big slabs of it and fry it!! Those days are gone though. Many of these young gals now a days don't have a clue as to cook like our moms and grandmoms did. They have been raised up, rather by mom and grandmama, by TV, Nintendo, computrs, cell phones, ipods, x-boxes, etc. and don't even seem to have the same cares or give a damn as our moms did (I am 56).
But Grits, great. Make you some good and thick with plenty of salt and pepper, just a tad of garlic salt, and make you some eggs sort of in between fried and scrambled and then mix it all together. If you have home made river fries or hashbrowns, mix them with it too if you want. That is how I like it.

Something that you rarely see available above the Mason-Dixon Line.

I'm not sure what the big deal about them is.....they are pretty bland. You've got to add other stuff to give them much taste.

I'll take a bowl of hot Quaker's Oats over grits!

It is true that grits, like rice, have very little taste alone. Southerners do eat them like cereal. We mix them with our eggs, add salt and pepper and perhaps cheese and sausage or bacon. Fish and cheese grits go very well together with some good cole slaw and make a delicious dinner or supper.

Yeah but you have to add sugar, brown sugar and tons of butter to make oats edible. Grits, just throw some eggs and sausage in them and you have a feast fit for a king.

You have to use brown sugar, cinnamon, and a little bit of real cream (not milk or half & half) with Quaker Oats.

Now a Pennsylvania favorite is Scrapple!

I will eat scrapple when I am in an area that serves it.

Man you need some real Grits, Waffle House will do in a bind but they aren't real, they're instant (yuck) Grits.

Tony is spot on. No instant grits in this house!!

You get you a good down home southern gal that knows how to cook to make you a big breakfast including grits made the rightr way and you will like them. But yes, they are bland by themselves, just like rice, potatoes, and a number of other foods.+

Grits are food from heaven and good with butter, salt and pepper, bacon or ham, and/or cheese. I ordered some grits in a store when working at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine while living in southern Pennsylvania. What I got were those MONGO sized hominy grits, Those were NOT familiar grits. It is primarily a southern dish. Out of habit, when I went up to Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, I remember ordering eggs, bacon, toast, grits and coffee. I was told "you're in New York now, and it will be hashed brown potatoes or nothing" :-) I kind of laugh when I hear the term instant grits. The longer they are cooked, in general, the better they are. Northerners and folks from across the pond find them enjoyable in the main. We are not hiding them here, it is not a secret recipe, so enjoy your grits, you just might enjoy them as much as any food you have tried recently.

Dave here's a couple videos for you...

Grits - It's quick Grits so it's not the greatest but you will get the idea, they just aren't as good as going down to the grist mill and getting your on.
