All through November and right up to the present day we've been having unusually warm weather for the time of year. Although it's mostly in the 4C (39F) range now we were enjoying temps in the 13C(55F) a week or so ago.
The downside to all this has been a lot of stormy and wet weather with high winds coming up the Atlantic coast.
Now we have Europe socked in with snow and terrible transportation problems all across the continent.
The forecast for Canada this year is a milder than usual winter with less snow. But I'll wait until that happens before I believe it.
This is not intended to be gloating by any means. We know what it's like to be hammered by heavy snow storms and can sympathize with the citizens of Europe and the stranded travellers.

Our weather is more affected by the Great Lakes, so it's been very cold with lots of snow. That frozen lighthouse is a good indication of what we're seeing. Of course, we're used to that in December, so it hasn't affected travel at all.

Pittsburgh is actually hoping it stays cold and snowy for the upcoming Winter Classic NHL outdoor hockey game on New years Day.

Unlike the UK for example, here in North America we're equipped with plenty of heavy highway machinery to deal with snow so it doesn't bother us all that much as you mention.
And I have my trusy Craftsman 8hp snowblower that has been doing all the hard work for me for nearly 20 years.

We are having the coldest December for 100yrs! Our daytime temperatures this week have not been higher than -5C and nightime around -15C and we are just not prepared for snow at all!
A couple of inches of snow and the country grinds to a halt, the schools have all been closed as well as Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport, every Premier League football match was postponed.
It said on the news that 1/2 million people that were due to travel over the Christmas period are now 'out of position'.
Some folks have slept for 3 nights at Heathrow on the floor!
I will be staying in front of my nice coal fire this Christmas and the car will be locked away in the garage!

Yes, we have been getting plenty of international news about the horrible situation in the UK and on the continent.
I recall going through Heathrow at Christmas time a few years ago and it was a breeze. I'm glad I'm not there this year!!!!!!!!!
The temperatures you are having are what we generally have in January or February here in eastern Canada on the Atlantic coast, but much colder in the interior.
Our turn will come of course.
You are wise to stay put.

We have finally returned to more normal temperatures. It was 42 F yesterday morning, when I left for a PGR mission and the high was around 68 F - great riding weather.

HELLO AL GORE
[/quote]
Hello indeed! I have not had any water since the 23rd December. The temperatures here have been down to -20C and the water supply pipe buried 2ft under my driveway has frozen solid!
Global warming my a**e!!!

It started snowing lightly yesterday, Christmas day, and now they are calling for up to 10 inches for today, more for tomorrow morning. Come on spring!!!!

Your're going to get NAILED with snow in the next 24 hours there in MD and those in New Jersey!!

North Carolina is has already declared a state of emergency. This one's staying East of me. Too bad, we could use the snow for the Winter Classic.

Rocky, looks like it's coming your way sooner than you think!!

Yeah, this will be the fourth Monday in a row that a nor'easter has come through here and we're getting a little tired of it.
If the forecast is even close we should get rain instead of snow on the coast.

The because the air is coming over the ocean and and warming up. If our winds are from the northeast or the west, we don't get as cold. It is the northwest and northerly winds that chill us way down.

Just starting to slow up here at 10:30pm, but it's doing a wrap around where it's doubling back as it moves north. Looks like we may have under 12", but it's hard to tell with the drifting (30mph winds).
My boss already called me to say that the office won't be opening until 10am. I was supposed to finish a big job in south eastern PA this week, may not be happening which suits me just fine. 2 of my co-workers are off until after the new year, they can help when they get back. Hahahaha
