Hi Guys,

on Monday as i was parking my 2012 explorer in the garage the side stand bolt failed with out any warning that it was about to do so (bike was fitted with the updated side stand bolt) and the side stand collapsed as l was getting of the bike on the left hand side (l do not stand on the foot pegs when i get on and off my explorer) and l ended up with the bike on top of me and pinning me against my work bench and injuring my arm and shoulders

Has anyone else had the updated side stand bolt fail? l have been in touch with the Triumph factory in Hinckley and they say that mine is the first they have heard off that has failed with the updated bolt fitted

I see the GEN2 side stand pivot has been changed from a nut and bolt to a solid "pin" with a circlip to keep it in place, the side stand mounting bracket, side stand switch, and spring are all the same part numbers..... wonder why Triumph redesigned the pivot point on the GEN2 side stand.......do Triumph know something they are not telling us ??

l have brought a GEN2 side stand, pivot pin and circlip as l would never trust the bolt that's used as the pivot point on GEN1 side stands again. My injuries could have been a lot worse, broken leg, hit my head and fracture my skull leading to brain damage or even death

That’s a bit nasty!

Do you still have the part numbers please? Were they outragously expensive?

I’m wondering if it might be worth us swapping proactively?

Glad you were not hurt any more than you were, i had that happened to me years ago on a 1966 Bonne., i wasn't hurt it just scared me, and i was sober.
Looks a poor design....fat shaft down to a narrower thread.....leaving to a stress point.

Due my bad hip....I have to stand on my left hand footrest....not good as kitted up I am around 100kg.....I need to look at mine....maybe I should renew every so often....

Must have been a nasty experience for you....

Sorry to hear about the poor experience. Bad enough to be a senior let alone be punished in such a fashion . The whole thing looks under engineered to me .

Is anyone aware of the necessary part numbers for the Gen 2 sidestand and bolt please?
Pin, Pivot, Sidestand
T2084020
Circlip, Ext, 8 x 1
T3500210
total cost for both parts is £5 for Fowlers in Bristol UK
You will also need a 12mm HSS drill bit to drill out the 10mm threaded side of the sidestand. a few of my bike buddies own GEN1 explorers and they have all converted the sidestand pivit that used on the GEN2, much better idea than the bolt and for a fiver and a 20min job its a no brainer

After drilling out the 10mm threaded side of the sidestand before refitting it, test fit the new pivot pin through the sidestand to make sure the pivit pin slides in without having to force it
