Funny you should mention the 400cc as I was just looking at a few photos of one from way back. They sure were popular back then and I did wonder why they actually stopped making them. A 400cc Triumph would really be cool
 
Back in the early 90's I had a 1983 Suzuki 400 twin for a year or so (took it on a trade) and it was an amazing bike for its size.
It had a gas gauge; six speeds and the best seat I've ever sat on.
I loved riding it, but I fixed it up and sold it for a few bucks to get my money back.
 
I can't think of any bike that I lusted for in my entire lifetime more than a Triumph Tiger Cub. I still do. I would like to see it exactly like it was in say 1962, but with cast wheels with tubeless tires, electric start, fuel injection and disc brakes. I'll send in my payment in full right now Triumph!

I applaud Suzuki for in traducing the SR400 retro styled bike, but wire spokes, tubes and kick starting only ruined it for me.
 
The sales potential in the Asian market is gigantic , many would love to move up in size a bit and a Triumph decal on the tank certainly would demand a premium . Sell enough small ones and they’ll be able to afford a Moto GP program . Then the big slide might begin ….

The East is definitely where there’s huge growth potential and the end users are mostly it seems used to the lower displacement vehicles from mopeds to smaller engine motorcycles. It might be a strategic shift in Triumph’s marketing long term plans. Their main manufacturing is there too.

Are you hinting that Triumph would be so crass as to go where the money is? Shocking!!!!

Well…you give the market what it wants and go where the customers are. In hindsight, it looks as if Triumph and other motorcycle manufacturers anticipated this. Not surprised since European nations have been making requirements for motorcycles harder to reach on emissions and other fronts. Not making an accusation simply going off of what I’ve read. So I suppose yes, you go to the market that is viable and look at what the customers there want or really can afford. I ran into a conversation where a person from an Asian country mistakenly referred to a 250 type motorcycle as a “super bike”. Well the styling fit, but not the performance. What I got from the conversation was that most vehicles in their country were mopeds and motorcycles under 250cc. So Triumph getting its manufacturing to accommodate smaller engine motorcycles makes sense.
