Hello all...new to this forum, mostly because I rarely have trouble with my bikes. However, my '71 TR6R refused to shift into 4th one morning. Nursed it home...got progressively more dodgy on the way. Clutch has now quit functioning altogether. So, I pulled the primary cover, pulled the kickstart/shift cover, removed the fasteners for the trans cover but stopped there to ask what's next.

Everything looks normal so far except the clutch rod appears to have been up against the little access cover plate. When I pulled the primary, I noticed that the rod had been abrading the small cover plate. Other than that, everything looks perfect. I'll check true rotation and all later when I can get the bike into neutral. Right now, I need some guidance on what to do next.

Must I now remove the clutch assembly in order to release the transmission? What is the next step in removing the trans? Also, is there anything pitfalls I must avoid?

Sure appreciate any help or education at this point...this is my first trans tear down.

Can you manually shift the trans through the gears? You should be able to use a large flat screw driver to leverage the shift mechanism to validate if your transmission is able to shift through each gear. If not, then you'll likely have to pull the trans cover and remove the transmission to continue the investigation.
Download the repair manual, there are also some great step-by-step videos online that can take you through the trans disassembly/reassembly process.

No, I can't. The clutch mechanism inside had failed completely and my best efforts would not change gears. I have now torn down the primary side and discovered that when I sold my Whitworth tools a few years back, I had tossed in my clutch tools as a "gift" because I thought I'd never buy another one of these. Should have known there is no replacement for you're first love.

Anyway, I had to order some tools last night from the Bonny shop. Hopefully, they'll quit smoking pot long enough out there to get my stuff in the mail.

Just kidding...they seem like a good outfit.
